The Citadel...Class of 2021

Hi Glen - my DS was accepted to The Citadel in November. He was recently invited to the Scholar Pre-Knob program next month. He just found out he has received the NROTC 4 year scholarship placed at George Washington U. The Citadel is one of his top 3 Navy ROTC choices. Should I have him notify the Citadel financial aid office he received the NROTC Scholarship? Or can the Citadel Scholarship be used for his room & board since the NROTC only covers tuition & fees? We are not SC residents (NY Long Island). He was not accepted to the USCGA and did not receive a nomination for the USNA but after visits to both he prefers the military college experience. He is still very much interested in The Citadel. Should I have him call the Navy ROTC office at the Citadel? Is there any advantage of attending Navy ROTC at a SMC over a unit at a civilian college? He plans to major in electrical engineering but is also interested in cybersecurity/intelligence. Wants to SWO. Any advice?

Anchor7: here is a response from the Senior NROTC Officer at The Citadel on process to transfer 4 yr NROTC scholarship from another college to The Citadel. Navy Lt. Zeiler is available to talk to DS and would welcome him to the unit. DS needs to follow the procedure in the attached. Also, he confirmed that the academic scholarship may be used to cover what the NROTC scholarship does not (R&B etc) up to cost of attendance.

"There is a procedure for the student to request transferring his 4 year scholarship from George Washington to The Citadel. Please direct the student to the website: http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/contact.html the contact information is on that page.
To answer his other questions: The Citadel scholarship will cover room and board or other fees that are not covered by the NROTC scholarship.
SMCs have advantages over civilian colleges because of the intense leadership training and character building received at SMCs.
Sir - we would be happy to have another addition to our Unit at The Citadel.
Very Respectfully,
LT David Ryan Zeiler

Contact Jenkin's Hall - Army ROTC. They will be able to guide you on her options and funding available. Did you do the FASA for financial aid? She may qualify for grants.

I spoke with admissions, Shamus Gillen and he told us to put in her application and get everything in asap. I am on a fixed income and am worried about the $$ I don't want her to graduate with a $100k debt to then still have vet school. He said 1st yr is out of pocket and then still have a left over out of pocket of about $18k a year, because it's a 3 yr rotc scholarship for tuition and books. Room and board is out of pocket. She is out of state and fafsa isn't going to put a dent in it. Am I missing something? I am afraid to show my DD all that and then say mommy just can't afford that. Single parent of 3. Ugh

Well, another route you can take is to appeal the Citadel Alumni Association. They may be able to find resources for your girl. The Washington DC Alumni Assoc sponsored on the first females to graduate.

Thank you! I will tell her to reach out to them on Monday

jllera1: have you or DS met any of the Citadel Volunteer Recruiters or other Alumni in Florida - and expressed your DS interest in The Citadel? If DS has academic, physical aptitude and medical qualifications to be competitive for a SA, has been awarded a 3 yr AROTC scholarship, she may be a competitive candidate for academic grants in addition to the ROTC scholarship. But applying late (Feb is late) is not helpful. The earlier applications are evidence of interest that Admissions often take into account. Nevertheless, if DS or you know Alumni in Florida, reach out and let them get to know DS and what her ambitions are. The Citadel is afterall a small college things can happen there that won't at larger universities. Just some food for thought.

We have spoken to admissions and she just finished her application this weekend. Her HS transcripts go out tomorrow. Originally, she wanted to stay more local, if not accepted to USMA, but now she wants a military school, so here we are. How would she reach out to the Florida alumni? Google? Any information would be great. You can PM me?

She just did application this weekend and we will be doing fafsa this week. She has been in contact with the Director of Admissions at the Citadel and based on her scores she is above the average stats to Citadel. How would I contact Jenkins Hall? Can you PM me?
