The Citadel

Thank you all for the feedback. The info is very helpful. We are praying for some positive news from the Citadel in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks again.

Just wondering if you have heard from The Citadel yet.

My son is interested in The Citadel and VMI, but really liked Charleston. I would like him to consider Texas A&M as well...any thoughts? This is such a big decision  and I really appreciate this forum.

Calmom, welcome to the forum! I had a chance to look back at some of the paper work that was generated from The Citadel to my son. His Academic Acceptance certificate was dated on Oct. 19 but I don't think he put in his ap until the first of Sept. when he could obtain his transcripts from school. He was already well underway with his Academy ap & he knew he'd have to have a back up school. He'd applied to six places & had decided on The Citadel/NROTC if his plan didn't go through.

Understand the big decisions. You probably know what a whirlwind of activity their Senoir year is. Do, do, do have him look at all the options out there & visit as many as you're able especially The Citadel. Its like no other college experience I saw & the Pre-Knob visit will probably make or break it.

He should visit all three and perhaps consider Virginia Tech. Like Texas A&M, it is one of the six Senior Military Colleges and gives a cadet a broad university experience. It is easy to visit VT and VMI in one or two days. They are 45 minutes apart. If he loved Charleston and The Citadel, I think VMI will compare favorably. The town is not as large but it has the plus of being in the mountains.

I know it is hard to visit all the schools on his list. We made the effort and it really helped my son make a decision. If you can rule out colleges now, the application process will not be as difficult. If he has a strong application, he will be accepted at multiple schools and that's when it gets really hard!

Many thanks for the responses! Another question, if I may impose on your time: If a student wants to play a sport at one of the academies and is contacted by a coach, must a nomination be secured -- in other words, must the same application process occur? Coaches write such short notes and aren't real clear about how to proceed. Thank you.

A varsity sports recruitment to a Federal service academy means nothing if a prospect is not nominated by a Congressman/Vice President/President/ROTC Commander. Federal law establishes this requirement.

As for the Private and/or State funded military colleges no nomination is needed.

There a few other nomination sources, before I forget. If your currently on active duty you can request a nomination to your respective branches academy through your commanding officer. And if your the child of a Medal of Honor recipient you are waived from the nomination requirement. There may be a several other rare ways to be nominated. Their requirements are probably very detailed only a few people would qualify, but I dont know of them.

I am a little confused by what you mean as "one of the academies". Nominations must only be sought after to attend USNA, USMA, USAFA, USMMA. Neither the USCGA or any of the state/private military colleges require a congressional nomination.

To answer the question, for Federal Service Academies - the answer is Yes! and Yes! All recruited athletes must be medically, physically and academically qualified and apply for a nomination. They go through the same admissions process as non-recruits. The entire nomination process is complicated and confusing, questions about the process are best addressed in the Nominations forum.

Thanks again. Just_A_Mom, what I meant was that he has been contacted by USNA about possibly playing his sport (I'm realistic -- many are contacted, few are chosen) and if he wants to pursue that we need to get hopping on the nomination process.

He likes The Citadel and VMI a lot and would want to go to one of those fine institutions, sport or no sport. And we will, as suggested on this forum, look at VT and A&M.

Forum parents: as my family goes down this road towards finding a fit for him in a structured, military academic environment, I am appreciating more and more the commitment you and your children have made to this country. For my son to follow the same path makes me so proud. Thanks for your postings and I am enjoying every thread.

CalMom:
I gotta ya. Yep - he should apply for nominations. Go to the MOC's websites, all three and look directions. They all have different applications, requirements and deadlines.

Just an FYI - Tomorrow they will hold the Democratic presidential debate at The Citadel. Ya'll realize that it was those Citadel boys that took the first shot that started the Civil War don't cha? The South shall rise again. :shake: I crack myself up. You Yankees won't think that funny but I couldn't help it.

Your right, I dont find it funny. Waving the confederate flag should be a crime.

Oh Chipster, you must know that I was teasing. Poor joke or no, it was still a joke on my part. Not sure where you picked up waving the confederate flag thing in what I was joking about.... I fly the American flag with pride & no other. Lighten up.

You mean the terrorists who committed treason by attacking a United States Army fort, injuring 5 US Army soldiers?

Ha ha, very funny.

How I picked up waving the the confo flag from your comment? The flag that represents the people behind the incident you mentioned. Dont need to be a genius to put 2 and 2 together. It is not a way of demonstrating a states rights or southern pride. The north does not wave its own flag, we wave the U.S. Flag and that is all. It is fine to feel pride in your culture, but your doing so in a way that disrespects the nation.

I know, I know. I get it. Baaaaad joke on my part. I take it back. Steering it another way. Not sure I would have used the word "terrorists". They were really just a bunch of kids that did something extraordinarily stupid.

On January 9, 1861, Citadel cadets stationed on Morris Island fired on the U.S. steamer, the Star of the West, which failed to supply Fort Sumter with troops and supplies. This was the first overt act of the war.

I think its the most freakish thing about The Citadel's history. Can't imagine what it must have been like.

Ouch Chip. I posted the same time as you so I just now saw your comments. Nope, I'm no genius for sure. The southern pride thing? When I made my little yucky joke, I meant it in the reverse of what you are thinking I meant. It was said with tounge in cheek so to speak. If you drive through the country side in many parts of the south, you see those flags flying. Its surreal. I don't claim to understand why they fly them & I don't lean towards any of those type convictions. "Disrespectful of the nation". You're making assumptions from one distasteful joke that is spinning out of control. Since its not actually "my culture" & I'm just a novice history gremlin, I just find it captivating study.

Actually, Jamzmom is correct, the South has risen again - economically. More "Yankees" (I hate that term!) are moving to the south than vice versa. The south has a very low cost of living - way cheaper than the Northeast and business is booming.

Having a daughter in school in North Carolina for two years and having driving through GA and South Carolina - twice in two years, I have to say I see more "Stars and Bars" on the back of pickup trucks in rural PA than I have seen in my travels - can't explain it. The media portrayal of the south is not what I have seen in the past few years.
Our country has a rich a varied history -a lot good, some bad. All of it is facinating. The Citadel is a part of that, both in the past and more recently in the past 15-20 years as regards to women. Does that make it a bad place/school? No. Does that make Charleston a bad place? No.

So as not to hijack this thread any longer:
back to our regularly scheduled program................................

(Off topic continued)

I agree, maybe a different word would work better, but if something like that happened today, what would we call them?

Insurgents?
Rebels?
Freedom Fighters?

I'm sure the British thought differently about Patrick Henry and George Washington than the colonists did.

Perspective is everything, and the winners write the history books. ;)

"Perspective is everything, and the winners write the history books." Pretty awesome true quote.

I guess I should have given more perspective on my part on the stupid joke I made in the beginning. Not that it excuses it, just to give insight as to why I grinned so loudly when I'd said it. If you read some of the press going on down here, it might make sense in that, as always, The Citadel remains controversal place. Some are feeling that with the Dem debate, the school can finally get out of the shadow of it's history. I've read so much that has been rather eyebrow raising that I knee-jerk reacted thinking people had read some of this & kinda thought it funny as well. Maybe not 'Ha Ha' funny but surely to some, very ironic.

You are so right JAM. They call this "the new South" for good reason. The larger towns & burgs have an almost international population. Walking down the streets, you'll hear many different languages spoken but hardly any southern drawl. Out of all of my friends where I reside, I have one who is an actual native southerner. My neighbors are South African, Filipino, & British. Its a very great place to live to get to experience the old & the new. I love the Citadel, not for its past but for what it has become. I feel Honor must seep through the walls there just as it does at places like VMI & Norwich. I do hope they show alittle of The Citadel at tonight's debate. Sorry that Chip took me so literally. He's a shining star here & his opinion matters to me.
