Someone who has recently attended the citadel, please tell me if you were able to stay in good shape throughout the 4 years. Are you in the best shape your first year? What is it like?

Current knob at the Citadel, you will be in decent shape throughout your four years. The only cadets I see that have a lot of fat on them are the sophomores.
You'll want to stay in shape if you plan on doing cadre after your knob year. There' also some extracurricular stuff you may want to do your junior year that you'll need to be in good shape for.

Yes - even if you are not contracting with one of the military services - there are physical fitness standards for all cadets:
Corps CPFT Assessments
Cadets are reminded that they must complete Physical Readiness requirements every semester. This includes being screened for compliance with Body Composition Standards as well as taking the Physical Fitness Test. In order to remain physically proficient, the cadet must pass both assessments in both the Fall and Spring Semesters of the academic year. Please refer to the links below for dates and information concerning these assessments.
