The cocktail thread (I blame the Rona) - post yours !

938FEEC2-B4D0-4541-895C-1BE6B17F99A9.jpegBeen enjoying Lobster Bloody Mary’s since we arrived at our Maine cabin a few weeks ago. Haven’t had time yet to get some lobster claws for garnish. When I do, I’ll post a pic.

Maine. The Way Life Should Be.

A 24-ounce Bloody Mary topped with three skewers of waffle fries, deep-fried cheese curds, deep-fried mac and cheese, mini corn dogs, bacon, fried pickles and a barbecue pulled pork slider.

I am going to make a trip to the Indiana State Fair just to have this and I am completely serious.

Can I just have the bacon off it, please?

Yeah, that's just somebody trying for social media likes. Go for it, but not really a drink. You might as well stick those picks in a piece of floral styrofoam, call it a bad pub appetizer, then wait for the ambulance.

Because we had lobster for dinner on the 4th:

...everyone preferred shrimp in their Lobster Bloody Mary mix:

Son and GF were visiting us at the cabin for a week. We ate well and had a grand time. Many adult beverages were consumed.

It's that time of year... Time for Apple Pie Moonshine!

No brewing or distilling skills needed. Here's my version:

-1050 ml 151 grain alcohol (750 ml should be plenty if using 190 proof. I don't think 190 is needed for this recipe. No infusions are really happening)
- 64 oz apple cider
- 64 oz apple juice
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 10 cinnamon sticks
- 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg

Put everything except grain alcohol in a pot. Bring to a simmer, and then simmer on very low for an hour, covered. Stir occasionally in the beginning until sugar dissolves, to avoid scorching.

Let cool to room temp with cover on. It if is still warm and you want to go to bed, you can keep the covered pot in the fridge overnight.

Add grain alcohol. MAKE SURE YOUR GAS STOVE IS OFF IF DOING THIS ON THE STOVE!

Strain (I use cheesecloth with my strainer).

I put it in mason jars. You can throw in a cinnamon stick in each jar to make it look pretty if you want.

A lot of recipes say to wait 2 months to let it mellow. Who has time for that? It tastes just fine on Day 1.

I spent several days on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail last week. I now have a new respect for one of this country's crowning achievements.
Very good stuff.

I recommend visiting The Commonwealth of Kentucky for this very reason.

What cocktails would y’all recommend for someone’s 21st birthday?

Or order a Paloma. It's basically Tequila and grapefruit soda (like Squirt). Very refreshing, too.

Beyond the recommendations above, please take a responsible buddy. Your limit in public is likely to be different than your limit when you drink privately with your buddies. The one that puts you over the edge when you’re at a buddies dorm/apartment isn’t a big deal if you are taken care of and can go right to bed. The one that puts you over the edge in public can be a problem if you still have to walk/Uber home.

Have fun, be safe. Make sure your buddies buy the drinks. Also, don’t waste your money on drinks you don’t like. You’ll eventually find your favorite beer/cocktail with enough trial and error.

Drink water along with your adult beverages. Hydration is key to combatting any physiological results of unbalanced consumption.

Depends what you like. Don't go overboard. It's better to enjoy a couple drinks rather than hardly remember a miserable night.

Old Fashioned, if you want a stronger sipper (with a decent bourbon).
Rum and Coke for a simple tall drink. Dark and Stormy if you want something with more ginger zing.
A Classic Margarita is always good.
A Gin Fizz is really nice too

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy is a nice beer (Breckenridge Vanilla Porter if you want darker)

Always finish the night with water!

And don’t be like our son:

A few months after he turned 21, he and DH and I were having dinner at a lovely restaurant on the Hudson that we eventually chose for his graduation dinner. The ambience and food were outstanding, and we were having the very best time. We started off with a round of gin and tonics and a sample of appetizers (we were testing the menu). Three amazing hours later, DH looks at the bill:

“Holy smokes, son! Did you have FIVE gin and tonics?”

“I guess so. There were very good, so I just nodded every time the waiter asked if I wanted a refill.”

Refill? He may have been new to legal drinking, but we have no idea how he got that far in life thinking that cocktails were like soda. Perhaps that second one impaired his thinking. DH showed him how 5 x $12 had affected the bill–you know, just a little post-dinner math.

Now, every time we go out, DH or I will say, “Watch those refills, son!”
