The Brits make something called a "Pink Gin" and it's not bad!

Navy Strength gin and Angostura bitters. That's all.

How to make a gin cocktail with elderflower?

  1. Add ice cubes to chilled glass (a big ice ball or block is better).
  2. Squeeze some lemon juice over the ice.
  3. Add gin and elderflower syrup (you decide how much of each).
  4. Top with tonic water. More of this than a regular gin & tonic because of the elderflower syrup.
  5. Garnish with lemon wedges and, if desired, a couple of small lemon balm leaves (or mint leaves, if you'd rather). I don't loathe mint, I just don't like it in my cocktails.

The Golden Hour
1 part Bourbon
3/4 part Lillet blanc
3/4 part Aperol
Grapefruit peel

I have to say that this is quite a nice cocktail. If you think an Old Fashioned is too sweet, try a Golden Hour.
Put a bunch of ice in a shaker and mix bourbon, aperol, and lillet. Stir for a couple of minutes.
Put an ice ball or block in a glass with some fresh grapefruit peel and strain into glass.
Enjoy by the firepit on the deck. That's what I did last night. :)

It also looks festive!

Mmmmm. I could do with one of those. And yes, it’s only 1028 Eastern time, but that yardarm thing is in full effect during the holidays.

@THParent are you signed up with Uber Drinks as a vendor?

We joined our neighbors at their fire pit last weekend, decided to try a new apple cider bourbon cocktail. Though it took a few tasting trials, we all pronounced this fire pit-ready. Don’t take any shortcuts.

It’s also the time of year I break out Licor 43 for any reason.

That apple cider bourbon cocktail looks like something I might try. We had friends over the other night. We served Brandy Alexanders.

To make it more festive, sub egg nog for the cream.

@VelveteenR A Brandy Alexander was the first grown-up cocktail I ever tasted. I was a little girl, and “that aunt” at a family gathering told me it was like a milkshake and let me drink some of hers. I did, and promptly threw up over my festive holiday party dress (family tartan, had to be ordered, oops). My mother had a non-festive conversation with “that aunt.” Years later, I had a better reaction, but never fail to have that memory reappear.

It is much better made with ice cream (as can be said for most drinks).

My mother gave me sips of her whiskey sour as a little kid. To this day it’s my favorite mixed drink.

Egg nog not so much. Threw it up every time I tried it. Never touched it as an adult.

Score! My daughter found me a bottle of Plymouth Navy Strength gin. Enjoying a martini right now. Remarkably smooth. If you can't make it out, the bottom of the label says, '57% is the benchmark strength, spirit ignites gunpowder.'

While really tasty, the martini was way too potent with Navy Strength and probably not the best way to get the full enjoyment from this spirit. Very smooth. but hit me like a ton of bricks. Next time. I am going to try either a Pink Gin as suggested by @THParent, or a Gimlet.

I had no idea that Plymouth was hard to find in our Republic. Glad you got a bottle. Good stuff to have on hand.

...'57% is the benchmark strength, spirit ignites gunpowder.'
By the way, the gunpowder proof thing is a British invention. It simply means that if you mix this spirit with gunpowder, the gunpowder will ignite.
It was simply a way for the British government to tax distillers of gin at a higher rate. Well of course. You have to get those taxes!

The British Navy did NOT store gin or rum in or near the ship's magazine (where the gunpowder was kept) but it makes a good story. ;)

By the way, July 31, 1970 was the last day that Royal Navy sailors received a "tot" or rum ration. It was called "Black Tot Day".

ECLIPSE Plan B - 4/8/2024 (my dad would have been 116, I always think about him).

No glasses? Bad weather? Poor location?

The one I plan to try:
