The dreaded "Hold" Status

KP is behind in going through all the files and getting the appointments out due to the Govt shutdown for 2 wks and all the closings KP had due to the massive amounts of snow. On hold would be a better position to be in than on File. If this year doesn't pan out for you and really really want to be in KP find out what scores you had and need and and take excellent math and science courses. Be a leader in one area. Get great grades. Keep in touch with your professors for letters of Recommendations.

Why is being on hold better than on file at this point in the game? Since they are behind all the people wouldn't that mean admissions still has to evaluate everyone else on file still before giving the holds right now a decision? Please correct me if I'm wrong or if you have any other insight on this matter from admissions but this is just how I would view the situation being an optimist.

My son's status went from "hold" to just a blank this morning. I don't know what that means. Truthfully, we were thinking it wasn't going to work out for him, but we were still hoping and thinking maybe a sap offer? This really confuses me, though!

Any ideas?

In the past when they go blank they have been updating status's. Good luck!

still holding

My son is still showing HOLD status. Is there anyone out there with HOLD that is seeing any movement?

dear wtdoorusna80 -

our son is still on hold as well- which apparently as of April 1st, is now a national waiting list ranked and developed from the state "hold" list. To answer your question, we are not seeing any movement on the portal- but some with hold status have in recent days seen the hold field empty. This apparently is an indication that the cadet is getting a prep school offer. Most I am sure will accept but some, for whatever personal reason, may reject their appointment. The Cadet Reply Date is April 15 - and after that cadets from the national waiting list will be offered appointments in order of merit.

Our son has been encouraged by so many over the course of this exciting and frankly nail biting process and we would like to pass it on to you - in a nut shell "keep the dream alive" if the KP opportunity remains your child's objective, and for some reason do not get the appointment this year- I borrow a battle cry from James Lawrence of the war of 1812; "don't give up the ship" :thumb:

PeaceBstill, Thanks for the info. We will keep checking and hoping. Best of luck to your son. I attended the Naval Academp Prep School and would recommend prep school as a good path to a service academy.

DS is a recruited football player whose status has been on hold for months and suddenly went blank last week.

DS received a manila envelope today from USMMA.......

I drove up to his school so he could open it between school and Lacrosse Practice....

He has been designated a Principal Appointee from the Academy to NMMI!

He is soooo happy!

Son hasn't heard Jack and he is also a recruited football player (what ever that means)

I'm sorry to hear that. What does the football Coach say? Has he tried calling admissions to see where he stands?

Our DS was recruited for football as well last year. It isn't a given that your DS will automatically get in based on sports alone. Our DS ended up going to NMMI as a sponsored prep and ended up playing baseball. If yours has a shot at NMMI, they can play there although it is a huge time commitment that they don't really encourage that since the cadet is there to prep for the Academy. There are preps that do play though and go on to play at KP. Being a D3 school, athletic recruiting doesn't carry the weight in admissions as it might with the Big 3 Academies which are D 1 schools.

Regardless, good luck with your Ds's journey!

Your son played baseball at KP or NMMI?

Is he playing football or baseball this year at the academy? My son will not be playing football at NMMI...fear of injury!

He is playing baseball at NMMI and hoping to make the team at KP. He visited with both the football and baseball coaches at KP and decided on baseball. Probably a smart move not playing football at NMMI not only for the injury factor but also to concentrate on his academics

From previous posts regarding the process of extending appointments, (ref the discussions around Domine vs. Kumar 2012), it would seem that all appointments for the class of 2018 have been extended, in order to achieve USMMA's desired yield of accepted appointments by the May 1 Candidate Reply Date.

It is safe to say that no more appointments will be extended, save perhaps for the few we hear about a few days before induction day?

skipsdad you were not kidding everything has gone quiet. Though still hoping for one more appt. Plan B will have to consume our household now. Congrats to all who made it!

It's very quiet. My son's status is still hold. He has accepted his plan b offer.

Based on a note from Admissions (and numerous past points regarding the process), USMMA has basically extended all appointments that it plans to extend. Sure, the normal caveats remain -- if they have too many turn down by May 1, then they may offer appointments to a few on the Hold list.

But, generally speaking, they have already offered a full slate of appointments assuming that some percent would decline, (I think for the class of 2017 it was approximately 68% or so). So, if their goal was to fill a class size of 250, then they extended approx 367 appointments (for you math whizzes -- 250 divided by 0.68) to achieve the desired acceptance number. Kids have been accepting appoints for months -- so I doubt that there is much uncertainty any longer in the Admissions office.

Furthermore, since the big 3 SA's have been slightly reducing class size, (other posts suggested USAFA was the first to do so last year, with USMA and USNA following suit this year going from 4400 mids/cadets in the brigade to an eventual number of around 4000 in a few years), then this would convince many on the admissions bubble with these schools to accept perhaps a 2nd choice (which in a few cases is KP). With only a 250 class size, then it doesn't take many with a KP 2nd choice to take slots that in past years might have normally gone to Hold candidates.

My opinion only, but given the slight size reduction of the big SA's, I think it's possible that the USMMA acceptance rate might actually increase this year -- thereby yielding the number of candidates showing up for induction to be greater than 250.

But, all that aside, kids who are still "Hold" candidates, including my DS, need to move on and work on the next best alternative. I suspect that most of these kids, given their nature, work ethic, accomplishments, etc would have pretty good 2nd choices, anyway. So, the key now is to move on. And, since we are starting to run out of April with the May 1 deposit deadline for most schools quickly approaching -- they need to move on expeditiously.

If KP calls in the meantime, great. But, the chances are pretty low.

I agree with the sentiment that: if KP calls great. If not, plan B/C/D are already in the works.

It's time to take a 'burn the boats' mentality... Go forward and don't look back at what wasn't.

And I won't be re-applying next year... My community college instead of highschool approach to school has put me in the position being able to obtain a BS in ME or Chem in 2 years. The lack of a USCG license is a downer... but hey, I can make up for that with a PhD!
