Members of the SAF,
I would like to say thank you. The amount of help that members and moderators have given me throughout the SA application process cannot be of into words. I only began putting forth effort into learning more about the academies in my freshman year of high school, and I will be the first to admit that I asked questions before I researched. Nevertheless, I always received an answer, and my "virtual friends" on this website became people I rooted for, rather than people I saw as competitors in the process.
I am graduating high school in about a month, so I am taking the time to reflect on everything that has changed in the past several years. Here are just some things I have noticed about myself.
First off, I became determined. Freshman year, I had to switch schools several times, and I was pulling pretty average grades because I didn't have a goal in mind. Slowly, that started to change. All I could think of was my primary goal: to serve the country. I found USMA one day on the WWW, and I immediately knew - this is it! Fast forward to my senior year, I felt that I should apply to all of the service academies, as I knew that I would be happy in any of the branches.
I was accepted with direct appointments to the USAFA (Feb 28), USCGA (EA - November 6) and USMMA (March 3). Shortly afterwards, I received an AOG scholarship to USMA. I am still in CPR for USNA.
I guess this post isn't really to showcase anything, but prove that hard work truly does get results. Though my grades and scores may not be the best of the best, I believe that the academies read through my files and gave me a chance because they saw potential in future growth.
In the past eight months, I was seriously struggling with my future plans, because regardless of a 17 year old's dream for the future, things change. However, the application process showed me so much more about how to hurry up and be patient. Even the nomination interviews were beneficial for me - I learned how to properly address and present myself in front of others, and how to convey ideas with respect, honesty, and confidence.
Good or bad, I checked this website almost several times some days. I can't name everyone that helped me, but thank you so so much. I accepted my AOG scholarship yesterday, and will be attending MMI this fall.
Finally, I will be taking my favorite quote along with my for the rest of my life.
