The Gunsmith Thread

I just spent a few hours at the range with my 2/C son before he heads back to Annapolis tomorrow. Put about $100 worth (today's prices) of .22LR in the guns. Unfortunately only about $80 actually went off. Never had so many FTFs in my life. Name brand, too.

FTF rates the same between different guns?

Yes. I was thinking it may have been a firing pin or spring problem, but is was the same issue in three different guns. As frustrating as the FTFs were, I had several shots that sounded like squib loads. Had to disassemble my Ruger pistol several times to be sure there was no round left in the barrel. Fortunately it is a Mark IV, which is much, much, much, much, much, much easier to assemble than previous models!

If same failure rates regardless of gun, that points to ammo as problem. Thinking humidity/moisture problems, was ammo stored in basement?
I just had it delivered. My gut tells me it is poor QA. I picked up every dud round and was able to fire each one. That tells me poor production.

Take a brass rod with you next time, open the bolt and lock it open, put the brass rod down the bore. If it comes out in the breach, clear barrel.
Tada.
One of those 'why didn't think of that' moments! Ironically, I mark my ramrod for my muzzleloaders with each load I use, to be sure the load is fully seated. Same idea, and I've been doing it for over 30 years.

But I will say... The Mark IV disassembles and reassembles in seconds. Ruger nailed it with this latest design.

New kydex holster. Not sure where the grenade goes. Maybe in your pocket?

@THParent The wearer would be OK cause the "front towards enemy" words are facing the correct way, right??

At the gun store we have no rules for brass. You can pick it up and take it with you if you want, or you can leave it on the floor and the folks who work there periodically squeegee it out of the way and into the range where it is picked up at the end of the day.

Nobody picks up their brass. I mean nobody. The availability of free once-fired brass is one of the reasons I have my fun job. :)
