The Gunsmith Thread

THP -- those are funny from my perspective, but unfortunately reflect reality for much of the country,

My ultra liberal niece visited at Thanksgiving, and I was all prepped for her anti-gun rhetoric. (She spent a summer interning at some anti gun lobby in DC, and is kind of a know it all). I deliberately left my squirrel defense gun (.177 pellet gun) in the front closet, and was ready to show her my cute little Ruger 10/22 and mean and nasty looking Benelli M2 and ask her which one was an "assault rifle." Fortunately, she knew enough to keep her mouth shut in my home.

I like the old ones, but the inflated collector value is way North of crazy, right now. If I had one, I would sell it in a heartbeat. Not if it was "Dad's gun" though. You never sell Dad's gun.

The "New Python" has both the serial number and a Q-code laser etched on it. "Ick", is all I have to say to that.

I have a friend who wants one. He thinks it will be a collector's item after Colt goes bankrupt, for the 4th time.
I'm not as confident.

Whoever thought a Q-code would look good on a firearm? Talk about not knowing what's important to the customer! Oh, that's right, we're talking about Colt, sorry.

Interesting. It looks like a takedown M-4, with a Cry Havoc Quick Release Barrel system.
Midwest industries makes a pistol clone of that, with a folding (FAB defense) pistol grip , as well. I think it's pretty spendy (like $1,500).

I live in NY & could get in trouble for even thinking about what you just said!!

Any thoughts, from the gunsmiths here, about Metcor 57 gun bore cleaner (& its sister Metalloid green fun oil) vs Rem oil vs the Sentry marine Tuf-Cloth?

Never heard of Metcor 57, Mettaloid green fun oil, OR Sentry Marine Tuf-Cloth. That doesn't mean they're not good, I just haven't heard of them.
I clean everything with M-Pro 7, and lubricate with Barricade spray and Slide Glide grease.

I've been watching Gunblue490's channel on YT. He's a retired LE pistol instructor, Armorer, & Vietnam vet.
Lots of gunsmithing/shooting/cleaning videos.
BTW: he cleans with mineral spirits (or Hoppes #9 "It makes a good cologne", he advises-lol) & lubes with LSA ("It's still the way").
Check him out.

If you have any wood furniture on your firearm, consider Ballistol; it's a CLP that's good for both metal and wood so overspray is no issue....and it smells great!

🍿🍿 because that’s all I know how to do on this thread, with no Acronym List.
😜

I went in yesterday to catch up on whatever repairs they had for me. It was the usual; several handguns to swap out OEM sights for night sights, adding all sorts of doo-dads to AR-15s, etc. My favorite was a guy who brought in a Benelli shotgun. He said that there was a problem, in that he couldn't get more than two (2) shotshells in the tubular magazine. It took me all of 90 seconds to take the plug out of it and put it all back together. I understand not knowing what a waterfowl plug is, but if you actually read the manual - it will tell you all about it - and how to remove it.

Clearly, this guy had enough dough to buy a Benelli, but not enough sense to read a manual. I charged him the minimum diagnostic fee of $25.00, which I often refer to as the "D.A. Tax"

My son and I were at the range awhile back and a "shooter" two lanes to our left was a fella who brought his shotgun to the range still in the box.

He had enough sense I guess to actually read the paperwork but the idea that someone would not do that at home or have an experienced person with them is almost unbelievable. It happened though and like we do with other non-standard range goers, we stood watch making sure the business end of that thing didn't point our way.

My fun job place of work rents long guns and handguns. You simply would not believe how many people come in every week to rent a gun, never having had one in their hands before. I think it's like going bowling, for some. We send them out with an Instructor.

A few years ago I was on a forum and a young hard-charger said, "The Marine Corps doesn't have guns, we have weapons." I said, what about the M-2 BMG? What about the long thing that sticks out of the M-1 Abrams tank? He said, yeah but those aren't weapons.

Huh?

It's nice these days to be able to call a gun a gun and not be corrected by those practicing their new terminology.

Well, I used to call them weapons, then as an NRA Instructor, I had to call them firearms. Now the NRA requires us to just call everything a "gun".

It makes sense. The ATF&E does not classify BB/pellet guns or muzzleloaders as "firearms", and in the NRA we provide instruction for those projectile-throwing appliances as well.
