The Gunsmith Thread

Those Lakes are cold all year long. Read those books and walked the woods as a young kid in the wilds of CT thinking I was Deerslayer and Hawkeye and the end on the Praire with his dog by his side. Wish I had some young memories of the Lake Region. Tough from the Bronx though until we moved. Don't have a rifle like Hawkyeye but I do have a replica Jerimiah Johnson 50 Cal .

That is some pretty good shooting.

I laughed when I read that the Drill Instructors were on his case for dropping two points. I also cringed when I heard him use the personal pronoun "I" in the interview. Congrats to Recruit Ferrell.

I didn’t see you post this here 20 minutes before I posted it somewhere else.

I have heard that Weapons and Ammo are in short supply with long waiting lists for both. True? Love the stories out of California showing that people are amazed that they can't just walk out with one. Not to worry, I have had mine for a long time.

I was at the Quantico PX Thursday and strolled by the gun counter. For such a small display case, they keep a nice assortment of pistols and revolvers and Thursday they were well stocked. They have several rifles and shotguns on the wall behind the counter. They had range ammo only in 45 and 9 mil but plenty of it. I haven't looked at a store in town lately and I haven't been to the firearms websites to see what they are saying.

@THParent is the one you are asking though. I know he knows.

Well, yes and no. There does seem to be a coast-to-coast ammunition shortage of popular calibers right now. "Popular" would be .556/.223, 7.62x39, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9MM, and .380 Auto.

Other calibers may start to run scarce, because right now manufacturers are clamoring to make those popular calibers as fast as they can. It is still easy to get 20ga. and 12 ga. shotshells just about anywhere.

Our shop was smart and ordered enormous quantities of .223 and 9mm before all this craziness happened, so we're doing great. Those two calibers are the most popular for the range, so we have every lane filled most of the time. We do not however, sell ammo to you if you just walk in to buy ammo. You have to be either using the range, or buying a new or used firearm to buy ammo. This rationing of ammunition has been going on for about four months now.

Guns are another thing entirely. The shop sells them as fast as they can get them and buys used guns as often as they can. The good part is that there is a waiting list for training classes. Every slot for every day of the week has been filled for the last three months solid. The training staff is busy!

O.K. Not gunsmithing, but I just fixed a scary problem.

DW's Chevy Equinox had a check engine light. I ran a code and it was P0013, a camshaft position sensor. I have replaced those on my Malibu I (same engine.) So, I order the part on Amazon and it came the next day. I swapped it in for the old part and went to bolt it down. It is held into the cylinder head with a single 10 mm, M6 bolt. This is where I "screwed the pooch." I over-tightened and broke-off the bolt flush with the cylinder head. I tried drilling and using a reverse-thread bolt extractor. No-go. Tried all day yesterday with no success. Today, I decided on the "Nuclear Option." Drill it out and tap the hole for a Helicoil, which I have never done before. Just did it. ALL FIXED! DW is proud of me. And, I kinda feel good too.

It was foolish, sloppy work to break that bolt off. I hope I learn to be more careful in the future, because I turned a 20 minute easy repair into an all-weekend cluster-f_@k

there's a silver lining or two in there; you un-f_@ked it and DW thought you were still her hero.

Hickok45 came up in this thread a few weeks ago, I always liked him better than any reviewer. And today I read a comment on his Youtube channel that explains perfectly just why I feel that way... "He's like the Bob Ross of guns."

Yes! This commenter nailed it! I certainly would have used better wording, but regardless am now in a shooting zen moment...
