The Military Feel Good Thread - Post anything

A Bill Guarnere, Band of Brothers short story:
"You're only as young as the woman you feel!"

Top Gun was such a stupid movie from a pilot's perspective, that I simply cannot wait to see the second debacle. :)

A companymate and good friend was the Navy's on-set liaison for the movie and ended up in many scenes.
He was a Topgun grad and has told us many background stories that really showed how much at odds the movie's intended
direction differed from reality. One example is that all of the radio chatter and lines during the flying sequences turned out to be
absolutely terrible as that part of the script was very poorly written so they ended up getting the Navy pilots to devise and
record completely new lines several months after all of the action had been filmed.

My friend had been a glee club soloist for a couple of years and it turned out that when the script called for Tom Cruise and cast
to sing "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" that none of the actors knew the song so the Navy stepped in and my friend taught
them the song and is in the scene next to Cruise singing it.

We served on a parent committee with “Hollywood” (Whip Hubley) and his wife Dinah during our son’s years at boarding school. He and Hubley’s son Ben were good friends during those years. Nice people.

Travelled to USAFA for A-Day a few days ago ...

The first time I was with DS at USAFA was for a tour in January 2019 during his first application cycle. It was late in the day and the National Anthem played for the daily retreat ceremony. He watched as I proudly faced the direction of the flag and saluted until the last note ended.

Can't tell you how great it felt during the A-Day ceremony standing at attention 100 or so feet away from DS, each of us saluting the same flag as the National Anthem played. Something we'll be able to do together for the rest of our lives.

The big hug we shared moments after parents were allowed onto the field felt even better.

It'll only get better!

Wait until commissioning...

My dad had tears in his eyes as he administered the oath to me.

Youtube clip of my second ship on the original Hawaii 5-0. USS Cochrane was an Adams class DDG. Notice the bullnose painted gold. The keel was laid out a few inches longer than the rest of the ships in the class. The first CO had the bullnose painted gold to celebrate the distinction.

My son was promoted to major yesterday. I remember being nervous and excited for him when he had me give him one last look before he drove over to TBS to check in. He looked sharp in his Alphas with one ribbon. That was going on 10 years ago and he’s come a long way since his college plans went sideways. That one ribbon has grown to over ten. Probably more. Haven’t seen him in dress uniform lately as he’s always in the field it seems. He’s always made me proud but the pictures he sent last night were a needed morale booster. Y’all have a nice day.

Congrats to the new Major, and proud parents. I like promotion ceremonies. When is the wetting down? Will certain SAF members like @USMCGrunt, @NavyHoops, and others be invited to celebrate the new field grade officer's promotion? Great news all-around! Again, congrats.

Not sure about the wetting down. They had to pull him out of the field to promote him.

I think that's more of a Navy thing than a Marine thing. We just bought the drinks.
Of course, I never made O-4 so maybe I don't know how that works. Attempting to pick me up and toss me is a good way to get injured. I expect that Tyler may be the same. ;)

First off, I am all for participation in the new Major's wetting down. He can buy all the drinks his substantial pay raise will fund!

Second, coming in from the field to pin on your bars is a bad-axx way to get promoted!

Third, congrats to your DS - that is a fantastic achievement. The USMC has made a fine choice.
