The Military Feel Good Thread - Post anything

I am so happy for your son and cannot imagine the pride you and his mom feel. Also, glad you got the morale booster you needed, heck, we all needed it.

Cheers to the newly promoted Major, and to Mr. and Mrs. Devil Doc.

Congrats! Now we need to see the dress blues. The fact that he rarely wears them reminds me of the scene in "The Pacific" where Leckie is sitting in a foxhole in the mud and rain, in tattered dungarees on Guadalcanal and he is reading a letter from his mom asking him if she should send him his dress blues.

My DS, on I&I duty, wears his Blues often (they have responsibility for funerals in his geographic area).

Standards have changed in the "new world order". You seldom see Marines traveling in dress uniforms anymore.

That time it was tough being a sailor on the "Mighty Mo!";)
I was in Long Beach when that occurred. You should have seen the PAO’s face pale when Cher came out in her costume. Evidently the Navy - Cher People agreement specified more modest costumes. The sailors’ eyes were hanging out of their sockets; the grind and enthusiasm were real. I was thinking “You ninny, it’s Cher.” I was on the senior staff there at the time. We had USS NEW JERSEY and USS MISSOURI homeported there, so much history on those wooden decks.

"On this day in 2009, Cpl Dakota Meyer charged into heavy gunfire multiple times to rescue comrades under attack from the Taliban. Over the course of the six-hour firefight, Meyer killed at least eight Taliban, personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers. Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 2011."

Over 90 percent of my medical science students say they want to be a physician. The truth however is that fewer than 10 percent will be qualified to apply, let alone be accepted to medical school. But who am I to tell them that? Right. So, I have them research the entry requirements of a health occupation of their choice. Most look up doctor of course and many have it narrowed down by specialty. Here's a part of the worksheet turned in by one of my students today. The answer to number three will make you giddy.

1. Name of your chosen healthcare occupation. Army medic

2. What are the education requirements for the occupation and what are the requirements for entry into that education program? 10 weeks in BCT(Basic Combat Training) and 16 weeks of AIT(Advanced Individual Training).

3. Name three universities where this training takes place. Fort Jackson, Fort Benning, Fort Knox.

That grunt won the class!

Why do you want to be in the military?

My 19 year old ended one of our many discussions over the last 5 years about him joining the military with something that will amaze most.

Dad: So military life isn't all fun and games. I got to live in Germany for 9 years due to this thing called the Cold War - NATO waiting on the CCCP to make a move and vice versa. I just make it sound like fun. Even your grandfather's WWII Navy stories would sound like he spent the whole war at a port in Australia, dancing with nice Australian girls at their equivalent of the USO. Today, you're going to deploy. Police actions some call them. You're going to learn exactly where BFE is. Our military is going to be kept in use somewhere. We'll continue to engage in situations even your fellow citizens may say are none of our business.

Son: I get it dad, but to be the greatest country in the world, we need a strong military, and everyone should serve or support our military. I'm not expecting it to be a 4 year Weinfest, and I know I might come home without some things I had when I left. It's my duty.

I'm by no means the gung-ho, flag waving type, and certainly not a nominee for dad of the year, but I must have done something right somewhere. Psalm 8:2 did come to mind.
