The Military Feel Good Thread - Post anything

I read Flyboys, by James Bradley. This book details the execution and cannibalism of five of eight American POWs on the island of Chichi-jima (near Iwo) all from one mission. The only American to be rescued was future president George HW Bush.

My dad's side of the family was from Florida and when we visited my granddad, he would take me fishing in rugged, wild swamp land like Disney World was built on. He wouldn't let my dad go with us because "if you don't eat fish, you ain't a fisherman." Tough love. We'd putter up Rice Creek in its black water with cottonmouths and gators on the bank.

This article about a fascinating general took me back to the heat, humidity, and the most deadly animal on the planet, the mosquito.

"This was an old Florida back then, more rugged, wild and so far away from the well-manicured Disney grounds known today. On a boat ride through the canal, Potter and his team brought a gun because snakes hung from the trees, his daughter recounted."

The heat and humidity are still going strong here. I still prefer the heat and humidity of summer to the cold and darkness of winter up north. That being said, when I retire I will try to get out of Florida between May and October at least.

George HW Bush was never on the island. He bailed out of his stricken TBF and was rescued from a life raft at sea by a submarine. Isn’t that right?

I esp. like the pic of Capt. Davis in shades while walking next to Gen. Westmoreland.
The article stated that his team sergeant was Billy Waugh. Billy Waugh is an absolute legend in the Special Operations community. SF, MACV SOG, CIA, 1st HALO jump.

Capt. Davis is a BAMF and looks the part, too. I hope past injustice is undone and he receives the award he seemingly deserves.

I remember when this happened. 11 months in North Korean captivity for the crew.
Glad the law was changed by the prior administration to allow for these types of lawsuits.

DS received a call from our Senator's office on Thursday to congratulate him for being selected for appointment to USAFA class of 2025. The family celebrated tonight with a Marine buddy of mine and his family. We used to be officers together at our local VFW, and he's always joked with DS about his desire to serve in the "Chair Force", but tonight it was on a different level, it was with that mutual respect all of us vets have for each other. It's been almost 3 years since he started this journey, and now it's really here. In a few months he'll take that same oath we all did and I'm glad to pass the torch to the next generation.

Those Falcons are tiny.

The older F18's that the Blues flew for a couple of decades were much smaller than the new/current Super Hornets that they are now flying.
Although both variants are listed as "F18", they are actually different airframes that look the same but otherwise it is almost a completely new airplane that has been in the fleet for a long time now.
