Hello to anyone reading this, I’m a junior in high school and very much considering joining the Air Force for cyber security or special ops. I really have no clue what to do which is why I’m posting this, so if anyone could point me in the right direction or give me some tips for some one in their junior year i would greatly appreciate it.

Well ! You can start with browsing the USAFA website and get to know what’s their application process, what is required from you and from others. Do remember each Service Academy has its own application process.

You can then evaluate where you stand as a junior and what areas you need to focus on to strengthen your application in next 12-15 months.

Good luck [emoji106]

Apply to SLE in December of this year (I think) and/or start your prelim app in Feb/March. The USAFA website will give you all that.

See if there is an academy day in your state, where you can meet with representatives of the academies. My DS went to one and was even able to talk to our senator.

My DS is a Doolie and went to the USAFA specifically for Cyber. He plans to be a cyber systems major. They have a fantastic program and you should make an effort to visit if you have the opportunity. Admissions can get you a tour of the cadet area and usually a meeting with a professor if you plan in advance. Be sure to discuss this in your application essay. We were told on our tour back in April, outside of pilots, Cyber is the second biggest demand in the USAF right now. Never hurts to state you have a great interest where they have a critical area of need.

All the above is great advice. Couple of more to think of as a Junior:

1- Start training for the CFA NOW if you are not already in good shape. Try to max the pull-ups/Push-Ups/and Sit-ups. All of this is reachable given enough time and determination. No excuse to do poorly here with 9-10 months to train. My DS was a varsity athlete but it still took him 6 months of hard training to be able to do max many of the events in order.

2- Look into Boys/Girls State for this summer. There is a specific place on the application where they ask about it so it has to be worth a few points on the WCS. It is a good program and may or may not be competitive to attend depending on your area of the country and how many American Legion Posts are in your area.

3- Take the SAT/ACT several times until you think your have done your best. It is not everything, as you can see if you look at the wait-list and TWE thread from last year where there are some 1500 SAT's that didn't get in; however, the higher the score especially in math, the better.

4- Apply to Summer Seminar as mentioned above but also apply at the other SA's for their summer programs. All are similar to some degree and give you a taste or SA life. They are all marketing tools so there is no guarantee you will get in. My DS applied to all four and only got into NASS but ended up with an appointment at USAFA.

5- Take the hardest classes in HS that you can as a Senior

6- Focus on Leadership experience in a club or sport

7- Be honest with yourself about any medical conditions you may have that impact your "Potential Pilot Qualified Status" with DoDMERB. There are far fewer spots for applicants that have medical conditions that would prevent them from flying.

8- Apply for ROTC Scholarships and have a plan B. AFROTC scholarship awards can pop out as early as October if you get your app in early. There are lots of good units that are attached to universities with strong cyber programs that will also get you where you want to be.

Good luck on your journey. It great to see young people who are willing to serve.

Call USAFA Admissions and ask for the STEM recruiting lieutenant. They should be able to talk about the cyber major. You will need to speak to someone in the Special Ops field to get more info on this one.

I am an enlisted Cyber Surety Airman in the Air Force ATM and if you would like I can send you details on what the officers are like and what the job is like.
