The Reapplying Club - C/O 2017!

Just an FYI for those of you who either will re-apply or who's DS/DD will re-apply. The cycle is not the same as first timers, who may benefit by early completion.

Do not kill yourself to get your application done early. It will not get looked at before first semester college grades are submitted, usually around early Jan. Use the time to improve your CFA or other EC's.

Thanks for that info! I didn't realize that and I was planning on getting it knocked out early. I guess I'll just get the small things out of the way first.

When does the portal refresh for re-applicants? I tried to start a new application, but it just brought up my old one.

Hi LFry94: Thought I'd find you here. DS plans to also be one of the re-apply and pursue ROTC in the meantime.

So what are folks plan Bs? In DS's case he's on plan C if we can afford it. He's been accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautics Univ. in Daytona Beach, Fla. (yep, literally next to the Daytona 500 track). He was just invited to apply for the Honors program there as well. Now we just waiting to see which way AF Schol. is going to go or what financial aide he gets. Looks like a GREAT scholastic program and very large (non-corps) AFROTC program. They also are very supportive and encourage re-app. AFA cadets.

It may feel very disappointing now, but you're all top kids to even be trying to get to AFA or other SAs. Look outside the box and you never know what gems you find. Strive hard and keep up the good work and maybe next year will be the year for all here!

On other thread, someone suggested Falcon Foundation. It's really only for those going to Prep-schools, but look into it if you think you might be headed that way. Good scholarships to help make ends meet while try again for AFA.

Some time in July if I remember the notice right. If going ROTC in college, let instructors know. I think some of them can direct nominate and it's a different process than what we all just went through with the Congressional nom.s etc... Good Luck!

I live here. I'm definitely looking into the Falcon scholarships. They look like an awesome opportunity.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Falcon Scholarships are not like the Prep school appointments. Falcons are qualified in all areas and are very competitive candidates that the AF wants. Also it is not something you apply for or can 'look into', you will get an offer in the mail sometime in May. You do not apply for this and they are great opportunities.

It's my understanding that you can apply to be a free agent at the prep schools. It's not the same as receiving a Falcon scholarship, but it will still be very credible on your application should you be accepted and perform well in studies.

That's what I did for Northwestern Prep.

You can apply to be a free agent, not the same as a falcon scholar though. Still a good option. I definitely would encourage to re-apply. I am a re-applicant and I year of college will help you so much-emotionally, mentally, and physically. It may suck now and you may think a year is a long time, but in the grand scheme of things it is nothing, besides it will go very fast:thumb:

Precisely what I was saying.

This is a great place for your DS to go. I am a part of AFROTC on scholarship at Embry-Riddle and it is a fantastic program. They really teach you a lot in the first few semesters but it will really help if your DS is looking into reapplying. Additionally I am in the honors program at Riddle. This past year they gave incoming freshmen each an IPad 2. Next semester I anticipate that they will hand out IPad 3's (if your DS needs incentive to apply). Rooming with honors kids helps when asking around for homework help. Additionally they just put in a really nice honors center specifically for studying. I recently was accepted into USAFA Class of 2016. The best advice I have for your DS is keep working hard. Make sure he keeps his grades/physical fitness high. Be an active member of ROTC and work hard. His work will be recognized and rewarded. I hope the best for your DS and wish him the best of luck!

Thank you Astro, great post! Interesting to hear you were accepted this year after attending Embry-Riddle. My son is attending this year (since no SA appointment came thru) and he is also in the Honors program and rooming with other honor students which I think will be a great help. Thanks for confirming my thoughts on EB and giving my son hope for next year on re-appling to the USAFA!!!

Some comments I wrote down from USAFA discussion

Hey all!

Here's some "tidbits" from the USAFA folks in case you're intending to "re-apply" for next year. While it doesn't always apply in all cases, I think it gives an insight into the areas that were looked at the closest in this cycle..

If the candidate still wants to earn his or her commission through USAFA, there are some concrete steps that he or she can take in the next academic year to become more competitive for the Class of 2017:

Enroll in ROTC if not on scholarship
Continue to develop leadership skills by actively participating in & leading college or community organizations
Seek a nomination early
Perform as well as possible in his or her college curriculum
Take a curriculum similar to that offered in the first year of USAFA
Calculus I or College Algebra (if pre-calculus skills need improving)
College Chemistry with laboratory
Physics with laboratory
College composition
A history or social science course (especially U.S. History or the History of Western Civilization if it was not taken in high school)
Retake the SAT or ACT
Stay fit and practice the Candidate Fitness Assessment before taking it for a score

There is always room to improve the application. Some specific questions and guidance may help them next year:

Did the candidate provide a good writing sample?
Were the topics they wrote about engaging and written with passion?
Was the sample written and revised several times and checked for: Content? Grammar? Punctuation? Completeness?
Did the candidate write the sample in a word processing program to allow for revisions & review of spelling?
Did the candidate provide optional recommendations to provide additional insight into his or her character?
Did the candidate communicate with his or her USAFA counselor and seek his or her counselor’s guidance?

In other words, there was not one single area that stood out this cycle, it was ALL important!!! If you have any single area that "isn't up to YOUR standard, as determined by the rest of YOUR package" then that is the area to really work on!

Just my opinion, but I thought this was a good list and while I wasn't told I could post it, I wasn't told I couldn't!!! And as one of those that received the TWE in his past, I would have LOVED to have a list of things to focus upon!

Thanks, Flieger! Great advice that I'll pass along to my DS. He's working on his registration for Texas A&M so this will help him decide among the available choices for classes. :thumb:

USAFA admissions counselor said that May 15th would be the latest I would hear about a P school appointment. I'm glad its only a month away as opposed to the end of June!

We are evaluated on this?

@ Knittle, good question. I wondered that too.

I know DS didn't contact his admissions counselor except for a few paperwork issues that were worked out shortly after he completed his PCQ.

When he met with his ALO, most of his application was completed and we were already working on DoDMERB evaluations, had most of the info ready for MOC noms, had his 3 additional LOR ready to go, etc. His ALO pretty much said, watch your deadlines and take the SAT again and call me if you have any concerns.

I would love to hear others thoughts on your question.
