The Waiting Club

Is it just me, or is it odd that there has not been any more big waves of appts?
No, it is not odd. This is typical. Right now, it is going to be drips from here on out.
Also curious if anyone knows if we should be moving forward somehow to get a medical waiver on our own so that if my DS has to move forward with plan B, he will be able to be part of the AFROTC program at his university. I am assuming he will need the medical waiver regardless. We have not thrown in the towel yet on his plan A, just trying to get our ducks in a row for his plan B.
Confused here. Did they not request a medical waiver? You can't push it through the system.
Did he apply for and receive an AFROTC scholarship?
~ If he applied and received a scholarship. AFROTC will put him through their waiver process.
~~ DoDMERB DQs, only the commissioning source can waive. USAFA and AFROTC are 2 different commissioning sources. 1 may waive and 1 may not.
~~~ He cannot contract (activate the scholarship) until he is waived.
~ If he is just a walk on (no scholarship) he will not need a waiver for his freshmen yr. since the DoDMERB aspect is not part of the 1st 2 yrs if not on scholarship.
~~ However, get your ducks in a row. They can offer a scholarship within their freshmen yr and they will need that waiver.
~~~ Remember DoDMERB is only good for 2 yrs. IE he took it 10/18. Does not contract until his jr. yr than that DoDMERB is no longer valid because it will be over 2 yrs old.

Good luck.

So happy I just found this site last night for support. My DS is still waiting as well. His hold up is the medical waiver. We sent in everything they asked for a month ago and it's still in pending status. We had given up hope since March has now come and gone. Now I am reading there are still chances even all the way up to June. And even those that initially received a rejection letter gets an offer later. So still keeping hopeful thoughts. This whole process has been a huge test of patience.

Yup same boat.....some people on here mentioned there would be at least one more wave of appts and I have not seen any. I also do not see some districts represented in the thread of appointees...ours being one of them. Not sure what to make of it.

Regardless, looking for insight how to move forward to get a medical waiver for him since he is fine from his injury and his orthopedic doctor wrote a statement.

Don't read into some districts not being on these forums. Honestly, only about 10% of candidates belong to this site. Sorry, but the candidate on your MoC's slate could have been already appointed, but bc they do not belong here you would not know.
Plus, most MoC's do not publish their appointees until May/June when all of the dust is settled.
~ IE MoC Jones places on their website 8 candidates on their slate that were appointed. However, only 1 is charged, the others that were on their slate could have Sens., Presidential, or taken off the pool list. Yet 8 are going.

The medical waiver, especially at this time of the yr is a little slower. It has to go up and down the chains of AF. They have many to review and the last I knew it was not a daily review, just like USAFA boards. First in First out. Take hope that because they requested a waiver for him he is competitive.

Good luck.
thanks for reply. We are hopeful that because they requested a waiver he is still in the running. Of course every day of no new email is stressful as the empty slots keep filling up. But it's not over until it's over.

Everyone stop stressing it’s all out of our contol haha ! May be steady drips , may all happen at once . The speculation helps us and hinders us in our predictions of what may happen . Judging what has happened in past years threads is obviously thrown us off this year . For most of our DS/ DD the end is near most likely in next week or two . Hang in there the end of stressing is close by and we will have closure soon ! Trust me been through this now going on second time still waiting on word for my kid. I stopped worrying about a week ago , I know answers are coming soon . I sympathize with all waiting for sure but know this Academy thing is a fickle beast .

Oh and would like to add words for those kids waiting on this forum . The fact that you all put yourselves through this process show an extremely high level of commitment and fortitude in your aspirations , and are fearless and driven . If you don’t get in , remember the end result is to be an officer and there are many other ways to reach that goal so grieve for a short while , feel sorry for yourself you deserve it , but pick yourself back up and move forward through the other paths .You kids rock and will conquer . So many kids don’t even try ! Talked to an AFROTC recruiting lieutenant at DS plan B school who applied 3 times to Academy wasn’t accepted 3 times , finished college through AFROTC and got a pilot slot. It was good to hear his story !

In a similar boat. DD got the offer of Appointment and accepted, pending medical waiver. Has two waivers she is waiting to hear on. It’s been a month now since all requested documents were supplied and received, waiting for an answer. We got the standard response about the timing. Can take 30 days or more, will hear either approval, denial or request for additional information. DD was invited and is going to Appointee Day, got the Appointee Booklet, filling out forms. And waiting, always waiting.

I stopped stressing a week ago too. Back at it again now! Ha!
Plan a nice vacation for you next month to decompress ! I planned mine for me and DH for all inclusive in Caribbean , knew I would need it whether kid got in or not after this second round
Excellent advice. With my oldest DS we scheduled a trip to Hawaii after graduation. Waiver approved, then got BFE in May, which made the trip even sweeter. Good luck to all.

This was super helpful- thank you. We don't know if they requested a medical waiver. When my DS called his admission counselor, they said they were still making decisions on bringing forward waivers and to sit tight. Sit tight has been several weeks. He had planned to apply for the AFROTC scholarship, but was 20 points short of the minimum required for it and was told that he would be screened out due to his score alone. AFROTC scholarship is 1230 SAT minimum whereas army and navy, I believe are 1000 minimum. Standard tests are not my DS' strong point. He scored very well on all sections of the CFA and has a 4.0 gpa and is an outstanding 3 sport athlete.

It is good to know that as a walk on for ROTC, we will not need to worry about the medical waiver. I was concerned he would not be able to be a walk on without it. We will be getting in touch with the AFROTC program at his University and start to inquire about necessary next steps going into next year. We are not necessarily concerned about the scholarship option although it would be nice. The bottom line, he is driven to be a commissioned officer and without question is meant to be a pilot. He has been working on his private pilot's license and this is something he is incredibly passionate about and is determined.

Hear, Hear, FireflyMom. As an ALO for 20 years, I like to tell people how inspiring it was to meet and interview such great young adults. We all hear on the news and see constant examples of how the youth of today are taking the country down the path of ruin, yet here is this great group of goal oriented, highly motivated, clear visioned about to be adult teenagers fighting for the chance to fulfill their dreams. It was an honor to help them!

Waiting is over for DD. She got the waiver approvals at 4 AM today, so maybe things are moving along. Good Luck to everyone still waiting. Keep the faith!

@70Zoomie I am curious because next year my son will be in the same situation (if fortunate enough to be selected) - will definitely need to go through waiver process. I didn't realize you can get an offer of appointment without having been medically cleared. Can you clarify what your DD received before the waiver started? Thank you.

Yes, happy to help. On 13 Mar, DD received the “Congratulations, we are pleased to announce your Appointment to...” emailed letter. Within that letter was also this, “Please note that your Appointment will be conditional until we receive confirmation from DODMERB that you are medically qualified.” I don’t know how different this letter was from an Appointee without a requested waiver. Our waiver process started in December, after the medical exam and medical forms submission, with a request to fill out an AMI. This was followed up in January and February with more medical data requests. In early March we were told that all info, plus a personal letter, were on file, and to sit tight. Then she received the 13 Mar Appointee email and the 5 Apr waiver approval email. Hope this helps. A key is to not delay even a day in getting requested information back to DODMERB or the Academy. The process requires time, and the applicant receives zero feedback on where they are in the queue. The ONLY control you have is your timely response, even from the very beginning of the candidate application!

My recommendation for anyone who sustained some kind of injury to have either medical visit record on hand stating the injury is resolved or a MD letter giving clearance. We received a medical waiver request for a MD note to clear my DS from a sport injury. We never saw the MD after his injury got better. It is hard to take time off from work to do MD appts. Basically it took us 2 wks to get in to see the MD to get the note for clearance. Hard to predict what DODMERB will request but the more paperwork you have ready to go, the better shape you will be in.

I was told by my ALO that the board meets twice each month. From this, I have seen a mass of appointments go out each month. I agree with your reasoning of the MOC’s slate.
