The Waiting List

Uggh.

Daughter got this yesterday:

Dear Candidate,

While the Class of 2024 is formed and we do not anticipate making any more offers of appointments, we will be retaining a few individuals on the USNA waitlist in the event of last minute declines, drops, etc. If you wish to remain on the USNA waitlist until after Induction Day, please reply to this email. Please note that should you receive an offer of appointment to join the Class of 2024, it may be very last minute and you would be required to report to USNA within days.

If you have made alternate college plans and wish to be taken off the USNA waitlist, we completely understand this decision and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

USNA Admissions

For the folks that have been part of this forum for the past few years...

Does this happen every year? Any insight from the past few classes? Have spots opened up at I-day?

I have known it to happen that people are informed right before I-Day, or even get to come in shortly after I-Day - but it can be rare, or it can happen slightly differently from year to year, is not to be planned for, and may or may not happen in any given year. Admissions can fill out the class any way they want, including last-minute “come on downs.”

Yes, this happens every year. The wait list starts with X number and as the class finalizes they send out TWEs to wait listers in groups. This is the first wait list cut I have seen this year and is not out of the norm. I have seen more come off the wait list than I have in probably the last 10 years, but I have no way to confirm that other than what we see here. We all hear of the elusive Mid who has gotten the call a week out from I Day. It is is rare, but has happened. If USNA is the ultimate goal, then stay on the list, prepare for the Plan B and continue to hope for that call.

I wonder if it happened last year ... after induction we spent half an hour with our plebes before the march before the doors closed. They waited like 20 minutes in formation looking for a girl they thought walked out before induction. Not sure if they would fill the spot in that case or not.

It was actually after the oath and before the march into Bancroft. Pretty sure that the class is fixed at that point.

You have better info than I do.

We were told at the time she walked out before induction. I haven’t heard anything since.

I was just wondering if they would bring someone else in in this case ... as Capt MJ said sometimes it could happen right after I day.

Lol, do you live on this site? I deleted my post within a minute because it was unnecessary.
That is some quick quoting. :)

Here is what is known. They can do it however they want. Obviously.

This year, they have a little more flexibility with late reporting. Plebes are reporting on different days, and heading into quarantine. So there is a 4 day span already. Additionally, their Oath won’t be taken until post quarantine, which could also allow for ‘later adds’. And lastly, the potential for some ‘no-shows’ is higher this year, imo, given the COVID situation. And while they don’t plan to not have anyone not clear medical due to COVID (my current mid has confirmed that the plan is to send positive COVIDS to a separate company), the potential is always there...and slightly higher with COVID.

IMO, and from observation, seems to me that they are keeping a waitlist cushion, more-so and differently due to this historic year. Makes sense!
Just in case they have medical turn backs or no-shows. Which has a potential to happen, and also they have the ability to accommodate late adds due to the structure of Iday this year.

What did y’all decide?? A plebe could go with literally their clothes, and PTR, and be fine! How exciting!!

24 more days....

Think our P2B will have a manila file folder and a zip lock, wearing his running shoes and a smile, with a freshly shaved noggin.

There is some conjecture/urban legend around what happened. I won't repeat it here. I will say the young ladies name will remain lore in my family for ever. We will never forget the detailers walking the yard yelling for her. One of the few specifics my Mid remembers from I Day.

To everyone who just got denied from the waitlist: reapply. I was on the waitlist last year and got in this year. There’s a couple others I’ve met in my class who did the same thing. If you got on the waitlist you were right there. Do great first semester of college and you’ll be golden.
