The Waiting Thread...

Ok so just reading this I am beginning to worry a little. I am 3Q'd with 2 nominations, but my CFA, while passing, was not exceptional. Now that it is March 1st, I believe it is too late for me to retake it. How much of a difference will this make?

still.waiting. :/

Can we still send midterm grades or update our resume if it has passed March 1st?

Don't worry too much. My son had just healed from a broken collarbone and took the CFA. His scores were so-so, but he passed. And he just sent in his acceptance yesterday.

My D's school is notoriously slow with rank, her midterm grades were just released last week, with ranking (Junior grades w/rank were released in late September of SENIOR year) ...we are sending them even though they won't get there for a few weeks....nobody has asked for them though.

Still waiting and stalking the mailman. Does anyone know what percentage of total offers of appointments have been released?

Only someone on the "inside" at Admissions would know that. And they are probably sworn to secrecy! If someone tells you they know this, I would be highly suspect. Can't base it on past years. More applicants, more snow, etc.

Transcripts date changed

I see on my status page that there is a new update on my transcripts dated last week. Does this mean the requested a recent transcript from my high school? This had October prior to last week

Still waiting...

I'm scheduled to go underway here very soon for the better part of two and a half months. I think I might go insane if I have to wait that long for news, and then worry about getting everything in on time.

I understood that they have email & internet while underway these days. Is that not true? A friend is in Afghanistan and he's on facebook every day.

I think em3nuketype is a submariner.

*Disclaimer - I am currently an EE undergrad and know very little about Navy subs.

Communication through salt water is a huge ongoing problem in electrical engineering because high-frequency waves (which we normally use to communicate though the air) don't travel very well in salt water. In order to communicate with a submerged submarine we have to use Extremely Low Frequency waves. Basically, ELF transmission uses a ton of energy to transmit across a tiny bandwith. As far as I know, the bitrate is so low that only text is transmitted (no audio and certainly no internet!).

Best of luck em3nuketype, I hope to see you on July 1st!

Sorry em3nuketype. Back in the day... family grams were all we received when out at sea (I'm an ex-bubblehead myself). If I remember right (not a given) we received 2 family grams per deployment. I thought sure in this day & age that would have improved. As a Sonar Tech, I know there are ways to receive data but I guess transmitting anything while submerged underway always will be a no-no.

We get e-mail, in the form of Sailor Mail, but it depends mostly on how much time we send at PD, and how much time we spend transmitting at PD. Based on what limited information I have about our next underway, we won't be spending much time at PD. Even when you are transmitting, the heirarchy of what gets sent/received is obviously mission critical first, then big navy stuff, then squadron stuff, then at the very bottom of the list is sending/receiving sailormail. (which is like e-mail, but the server translates it into a word only type format with limited punctuation.)

I thought the fellow members of the mailbox team would get a kick out of this. Yesterday a large envelope arrived from MOC. It sat on the counter all afternoon and into the evening until son arrived home from practice. When opened it was a beautiful picture of MOC and son in a navy blue frame signed, "best wishes, MOC". (Remember our MOC had mulitple nominations to USNA) Very nice of him to send this out to all of his nominations but I cry foul-not now please. Oh, and large blue catalogues should also be banned.

Oh, and large blue catalogues should also be banned.

In actuality, it is a "Large Manila Envelope" with the Large Blue Folder inside.

Our son's "offer of appointment" arrived 1 year ago today in the middle of a snow storm...

Good luck....:thumb:

Well I'm still waiting, but I have been thinking about the possibility of rejection quite a bit lately.

How have any of you dealt with it before? Any tips? I don't even want to think about what happens if I will be rejected. I know I will be severely disapointed.

Having a back up plan may help with the possibility of rejection. My son had a two parted back up plan: accepted to Texas A&M, paid up dorm deposit, etc. And a firm resolve to apply to USNA again should the TWE arrive. He was totally set. I do think, had it come to that, that his already having made the decision to re-apply would have made the bad news easier to take. I think it would have made it easier to move immediately forward to figure out what to do to strengthen his application package and try again!

Good luck!:thumb:

News Story from Washington DC ABCTV news website

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The U.S. Naval Academy is reporting a record number of applications, both overall and in the number of minorities who have applied.

Bruce Latta, the dean of admissions, told the academy's Board of Visitors on Monday that the school received 17,416 applications for the class of 2014. He says that's 2,100 more than last year.

A typical class at the academy has about 1,230 students.

Minority applications went up to 5,382, nearly 1,000 more than last year. That's almost a 23 percent increase.

The Naval Academy has made a big push over the last three years to reach out to minorities and parts of the country that have been underrepresented at the school.

The Academy also has a new commandant. The academy announced Monday that Capt. Robert E. Clark II, a class of 1984 graduate, has been chosen to be the 84th person to hold the position.

The commandant is responsible for the military and professional development of about 4,400 students who attend the school.

He will replace Capt. Matthew Klunder, who has been commandant since June 2008. Klunder's next assignment has not been announced.

Our waiting story........MOC nominates 9 on Jan 25. On Jan 30, one of the 9, with a sibling at the academy, receives an appointment. I don't know if any of the others have received an appointment or TWE. My child's status says "In Process". We just pray and wait. Nothing else will make a difference at this point. But, I am the type to over think and obsess:rolleyes: How crazy is it that my biggest worry is my child is white and male??
