Thin White Envelope

It seems awful early in the admissions process to get a thin white envelope letting my DD know that it is highly unlikely she would get accepted. However she just received one today even though she has 35 ACT, 4.2 GPA, attended SLE, and a positive interview.

is this a form letter based upon the completeness of the file or how should this be interpreted?

Confused

Did she have an medical issues? Her academics seems to be pretty good.

This seems weird to me as well. Is there any part of her application that is severely lacking? Or maybe medically dq’d?
I’ve never seen someone get a TWE so early before.

I have never seen a TWE, but I understand the intended use of it is as a rejection letter. It is not going to tell you the that an appointment is unlikely, it will tell you an appointment is not being offered, period.
I recommend for her to contact her RC for clarification. With the stats you posted and not knowing anything else, I would expect this to be an LOE if anything , “ Unlikely “ being a typo instead of “likely “ being the intended word. Let’s hooe that’s the case!

She just had her DODMERB physical last week and eye exam this Monday. No issues. Much of her application was completed this week but the “form” letter was dated 7 days ago and she saw her Regional Commander this past Saturday at an Admissions Briefing, also after the date of the letter with no mention of it.

Seems poor form to me.

The stats you provided are competitive, even highly competitive. She needs to reach out to the RC Monday and ask for specific more areas she’s lacking . Maybe no leadership? Even so, I believe it’s an error by the RC.

I think your daughter will need to reach out to her RC in order to discuss it. I doubt that short of that you will get clarity. RCs can make mistakes. They are human. Hopefully, that is the situation here.

Based on what WP look for in a candidate, is there anything she is severely short of?

Academics - with ACT 35, high GPA she looks extremely competitive

EC - ??

CFA - ??

Medical - ??

If not human error, there must be some sort of hard stop on her application.

It is clearly a TWE but odd given her stats, especially this early in the cycle.

Agree on her contacting the RC.

Definitely contact the RC and make sure there wasn't a glitch in the works.

This is such devastating news heading into a weekend when you can't reach anyone. Like the others said though, it must be a mistake or the majority of candidates out there have no chance. Fingers crossed for good news and please update after hopefully finding out that it was a mistake.

Interesting letter. It speaks to the combination of class rank, test scores and leadership. So, via process of elimination, could it be leadership that’s lacking? You don’t mention it alongside GPA and ACT, so maybe? Remember that SAs measure leadership not just via participation (clubs joined, titles won) but by actual impact on an organization or community. As others have said, worth learning more, especially if DD decides to reapply (or to burnish credentials for ROTC scholarship).

Leadership, girls state, gold award, team captain are all big WCS boosters. She may be lacking there.

Hoping your daughter has a good weekend.

It’s so tough when adversity happens but it’s you handle it - mistake or not. Contact the RC and hopefully figure it out. Her stats are amazing. Whether or not it’s the end of the road for USMA, it’s a door opening somewhere else.

A big disconnect given her DoDMERB was triggered, assuming it was trigged by USMA?
Hope you get some answers this weekend. Can your DD contact her FFR as well? I know my DD's FFR is on very good terms with his area person (a big FFR?) and they seem to have longstanding relationships with the entire regional admissions team.

There is absolutely no way of knowing short of the RC telling her. It is possibly due to the competitiveness of her district among many other possibilities. The RC has WCS scores and if there are 2-3 ahead of her already with LOAs and/or your member utilizes Principal Nominations it may simply be a math question. Silver lining if it is correct is you can focus on your other plans.

Stats do not a candidate make...haven't we learned that many times on this forum? Truly sorry for this young person, but there is obviously something quite clear in the wording of this letter. Whatever that is, nobody will likely ever know (except for the author of the letter). There are just so many factors and variables involved in the process.

Has this young person applied for an Army ROTC scholarship? Great option for those who really want to be commissioned and serve our great nation.

I agree with what is stated above...early in the process yes, but now plenty of time to move on.

For her RC to issue this letter this early, either it is the wrong form letter, or the stats you provided are not correct (not likely). More likely would be a LOE indicating the areas she needs to improve, or an LOA. This is REALLY early for a TWE! Most MOC's have not submitted their slates yet, and there is still time to improve standardized scores and athletic/leadership activities if they were truly lacking.

A phone call by your daughter (not you) inquiring which area her RC was specifically indicating that she needs to improve would seem in order. But also, DO NOT forget Plan B and C. NEVER count on any appointment, always have another plan either ROTC, Civilian College, or Enlistment if she wants to look that way. Seems like with her academics she would be a shoo-in for a academic scholarship at the very least, then try for OCS.

@Goarmy85 - that letter is called a 'Screened' Letter. Her file is closed unless there is improvement in her file.
You only told us her ACT score and GPA - her academic accomplishments ( which are very good), but no mention of her leadership or sports.
Is it possible that one of her teachers gave her a bad evaluation on the SOE? Did she not do well on her CFA?
As everyone else has suggested, have her call the RC.
All is not lost if she can improve in the areas that her RC says where her file is weak. 'Screened' files can become 'unscreened.'
