Third AFROTC Scholarship Board Cancelled

As far as stats, his SAT was 1550, National Merit Finalist, unweighted GPA 3.7, lots of extracurriculars.
Great academic stats. And I have no insight other than oft-repeated conventional wisdom on this forum that with AFROTC in particular, the interview carries paramount importance. Some opine too much importance. But there's definitely a place for your son in a commissioning program even if it turns out that it's not through the AFROTC HSSP!

DS awarded Type 7 (non STEM major) on second board, upgradable to Type 1 (will attend school on the upgrade list). Declining AFROTC offer as he has accepted NROTC Marine Option scholarship.

This must be absolutely true.
I post this for you and anyone who might search in the future. My DS did no score higher than a 26 on his ACT, with canceled tested there just wasn’t opportunities for him so that’s the score he submitted.
However, he’s had countless leadership experience through CAP ( currently the cadet squadron commander, but has attended countless leadership schools and held other positions since age 13) from which he gained interview skills and his leadership style from . On top of that he has a strong volunteer history, multiple sports for his entire high school career ( not the captain) he aced the PT test, and has an unweighted 4.0 with AP / college level courses.
He blew the interview away, answering all the questions with poise and ease. He also will have his private pilots license next month. So while he did not score high on his test scores, he’s extremely well rounded.
So just because one scores high does not mean they’ll get the scholarship, this is not your typical merit scholarship program!
But also, don’t give up hope if you scored low either. I didn’t think it would happen, but even with the cuts this year my son received a scholarship.

I should note that he didn't just have high acadademic stats -- Eagle Scout, Class Vice President, 2 Varsity Letters, Captain of AFA Cyber Patriot Team that did well nationally, President and founder of 2 high school clubs, appointed student representative to City government and School Board, work experience. co-author of research paper with College Professor on Computer Science -- he was also very well rounded. I thought that he also aced the interview. I think the PT test was low, but it was a low pass.

I second this! DS came downstairs from his interview and one of the first things he said was how much CAP helped him in his interview. He said they asked a lot about the AF core values, which they talk about in CAP all the time. He had a high ACT, but he had some Bs and even a C in calc on his transcript and was still awarded a Type 1 yesterday. For all future applicants, I highly recommend CAP. Not only will it give you great leadership opportunities, but our son got to do really cool things like go on two O flights and fly in a Blackhawk at encampment.

Well some folks won the lottery and others lost. 1560. perfect 4 point. Number one high school in the country with very tough classes. 5 of his classmates in a class of 120 going to MIT to give you a sense of this school. Not a single B in high school. No offer from AF. That is life. Congratulations to your kids that won. They are great and you should be super proud.

I’m sorry your son didn’t get the scholarship and his first choice. My DS has dreamed of USAFA since middle school but didn’t get a nomination there. We adjust our plans and move forward toward the same goal on a different path. And if he wants to apply to USAFA again, he can. It stings for a bit, but in the end, his goal is to be an officer in the USAF and hopefully a pilot, and there are many ways to get there. I hope your son finds his path!

You, again???

I had to email the technician to fix mine. It works now and I was notified I did not receive a scholarship offer with a 3.95 GPA and a 1380 SAT score. Still very surprised.
Just received an offer of appointment from USAFA today, makes me feel better about not being offered an AFROTC scholarship. The two entities probably communicated with each other.

My understanding is that they actually don't communicate with each other, as it is up to the candidate to decide which offer to accept and they have until I Day to decide. Some will decline the academy for ROTC and vice versa. Additionally, our DS received both which would confirm they are independent at least in our case. Could vary under different circumstances I'm sure.

Edited to Add: As was also explained to me (by one of the knowledgeable veterans of the process on this forum) they are very different because one has a significant regional component (academies) while ROTC, not as much if at all. Depending on a candidate's region, the academy could be more OR less competitive than receiving an ROTC scholarship.

Yes, this is correct. DS was awarded a Type 1 AFROTC scholarship and didn’t even receive a nomination to USAFA (Uber competitive district in Colorado). It kind of blows my mind that he could get the Type 1 and not even receive a nomination, but the regional thing really does make the SAs a different type of competition. Thankfully, the AF provides multiple avenues to commission as an officer!

Congratulations! The academy may not have been in his future, but it is a very select group that are offered Type 1 Scholarships.
