this DoDMERB qualification process is no joke

My son landed on his foot wrong at the beginning of basketball season in eight grade ... Jones fracture.

He didn’t report it on his medical questionnaire because he misread it ... he didn’t have surgery.

When he got to the doctor’s exam ... he told her that he broke it and didn’t need surgery. He asked the doctor to update his questionnaire. She did.

DoDMERB flagged it and wanted more info. He wrote and signed a statement that it was he who told the doctor to update his form ... and that he has played 3 sports since eight grade and was able to come back for he last games in eighth grade.

They cleared it immediately.

Are there any special forms to be used by private physician to submit x-rays/test results? Opted for private dr because it seems like time is an issue.
After being 3Q w/nominations, DS medical status changed and they now want scoliosis tests. DS does not have scoliosis (at least we don't think he does...) He failed middle school screening and was sent to specialist and determined NOT to have scoliosis. Wonder why this is just now a problem? He was medically cleared/qualified right after his September medical exam. Frustrating. We have an appt with doctor this week. I'm not sure if he will meet the curvature qualifications or not... haven't thought about scoliosis since he was 12. Did we make a mistake in disclosing that info from middle school???

If your son was never diagnosed BY A DOCTOR with scoliosis and you were merely referred by a screener (nurse) then yes, you did make a mistake. The middle school screenings that I know of are not in any way a diagnosis, merely a rough look that sent you to more screening. If the doc then said no then there was never any scoliosis, CASE CLOSED.

Generally according to DOD Inst 6103.03 if there is any hardware left as a residual then the candidate will need a waiver. This is not usually a problem, but each service wants to individually evaluate any restrictions or residuals of fractures, breaks, or deformities. And as long as the particular SA or ROTC does not "specify" DOD Exam, you can use you family doctor. But I am not so sure the doctor can directly submit....usually it has be uploaded into the candidate's DoDMERB portal by the candidate. Just make sure the doc specifies "No Residuals" and "full Activity without restrictions"....that usually does the trick.

The factor is timing, if the waiver or remedial was just submitted DodMERB told my DS last week that it is taking 30 days to upload into the candidates file and review before any action is taken. And we are getting close to having to make that fateful decision to use "Plan B" or give up a possible scholarship and HOPE!

I snapped my arm in half in 8th grade. Didn't have to do any of this stuff. Just went through the normal screening.

It was never brought up in his DoDMERB exam, and he was cleared very quickly. I still have the form the original doctor filled out to return to the school saying "no scoliosis". I'm still stunned that he was 3Q, and now it seems that they are taking it back. We do have dr appt tomorrow, but if there was a way to clear this up prior to the appt, I would be in favor of that! Even if he is found to have no scoliosis, it seems like this whole thing will muddy up the process and slow things down. Very frustrated. Thank you for any suggestions you are able to provide.

Sorry, I have no suggestions at this point except to aggressively provide any and all paperwork from medical evaluations and visits as soon as humanly possible. Once the light has been shined on an issue, it can be difficult to deal with it within the DODMERB system. For What Its worth, my take on the "report visits to specialists" instruction refers to visits where you were referred by a medical doctor. An example might be someone who sees a family history of joint issues and takes the child to an orthopedist for an exam without referral (out of the blue) and the orthopedist examines and finds no reason for concern. In my opinion, this is not something to report to DODMERB years later.

NOTE: While I am an experienced Naval Officer, BGO, and alumni parent, I've had no training in "DODMERB Law" and these are my personal opinions.

I might have your son call or email their DODMERB facilitator (they are assigned alphabetically). Our facilitator was very helpful in clarifying some of the AMIs necessary. Again Best of Luck
