Is there any reason to be in Annapolis and get on the Yard the Thursday of PPW? This years PPW is Thurs Aug 11 to Sunday Aug 14 and looking at last years schedule, liberty began on the Friday at 1300. So what happens on the Thursday?

All of this is because I'm trying to make hotel / travel arrangements.

We flew in Wednesday because it is a long flight for us and with grandparents to settle in. Thursday wanted to see PEP early in the morning but didn't make it, colors - formations, get our DBIDs, go to the mid store, go on the tour, go to the presentation, go to academic presentations and not feeling rushed to do any of these things the next few days. Oh and did I mention leave a deposit in the mid store? After we got our plebe Friday, he just wanted to leave as soon as he showed us his his room. *and every day he wanted to leave asap and return at the end of liberty, not hang around on yard. BTW, the traffic back to yard is bad so they all wanted to be back early.

For Class of 2022, we were able to watch noon and evening formation. (And see a few parents make fools of themselves by approaching and even mingling with their mids while in formation. 😬🙄😳) We observed PEP on Friday morning but that can change this year, as I have it in good authority that some people in high places aren’t crazy about outsiders watching PEP. Agree with folks who said above that it’s a good time to get DBIDS cards, pay tuition at the Mid Store, and even visit the museum.

My child would have used some third degree black belt move to put me down immediately if I tried that. I can’t imagine, but maybe it was an international student or someone who simply didn’t know???

Oh you’d be amazed at what you see people do on the Yard. I came out of my quarters (complete with my name on the steps) one afternoon on Worden Field, and a family was sitting on my steps and on folding chairs on my front lawn, having a picnic, waiting for a parade to begin and liking the shade. I let them be before they asked to use the bathroom and get a house tour, which often happened to colleagues who lived on Worden Field and Porter Row. I had parents buttonhole me at doors to Bancroft, asking me to let them in so they could drop something off for their mid. I had to speak to several trying to get mids to let them in. I too have seen parents go right into the ranks while mids were in formation or obviously doing something official; we are not talking about tourists who have no situational awareness. 🙄

Yowsers. Cannot imagine doing it. He would never speak to me again. And even if I was lost (which I was near Worden Field dragging around a rolling suitcase while looking for Navy Alley Hotel), I would have obviously noticed the names on the steps and personal yard and porch memorabilia indicating it was a private residence.

Some people are just clueless. Or obtuse. Or both.

You have the patience of a saint.

My thought balloon read “Boundaries, you nitwits, boundaries!”

Yes!!!! I would be mortified to be caught in some personal space. A nice woman directed me to my locale but I made sure I wasn’t on her lawn when I asked.

to the orig question...we scheduled to arrive Friday morning so that we could do a few things (DBIDS, relax, coffee) and then watch noon formation and pick up DD for liberty. Other than planning on seeing Bancroft room, we intended to hang at house with her and do what she wanted. We intend to slowly filter the items she requested back with her to hall at the end of liberty each day (watch, laptop and other small stuff). Her desires and needs will surely change between now and then, so we are totally flexible.

If form holds, the parade is on Friday morning. The Yard will be crowded with excited family and friends. So will the office at Gate 1 where DBIDS are issued, and the Mid Store. You’ll need to get to T-Court fairly early to nab a good vantage point for noon formation. Then be ready to scram once room is shown and intros are made. Plan accordingly and follow your plebe’s lead.

It is definitely worth getting to Annapolis on Thursday morning (if you can) to get DBIDS cards (I think they close at 1400). Friday is a zoo and after noon formation you want to spend time with your mid. Seems like it was two years before we managed to be at the Yard to get our cards. If they let you view PEP on Friday morning of PPW, you can’t get onto the Yard until 0800 w/o card but 0700 with

Ok got it. Should bring chairs and picnic blankets for lunch on the sups lawn, and also bring cold beverages for the plebes in formation. They sure do look hot out there.
That's a bunch of stuff to carry ;). Be patient. In about four years you'll have an invitaion with your mid to attend the Superindendent's Garden Party reception. His "back yard" is pretty nice. They're will be food, drinks and merriment during graduation week. Plebes always look hot and thirsty during the summer. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Keep in mind the vast majority of parents mostly do the right thing. It’s the ones who don’t that are memorable for the wrong reasons.

Yeah I should have put the appropriate emoji on that post! (Can't edit now). I was just trying to be sarcastic. I'll behave myself while on the Yard. I remember the first time I was on the Yard, it only took 0.2 seconds to figure out the houses were private residences.

So no reason to arrive Wednesday night to have the whole day Thursday? It seems like Thursday has some light activities which are interesting, but not "must see".

You can hunt for plebes. For last summer, we could tell that parents were starting to arrive because the audience for noon meal formation was slowly increasing. Parents love to find their plebes and make sure the detailers know who is theirs. Makes for some fun conversations at meals
