By Tiger Woods

Editor's note: Below is the speech Tiger Woods gave on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. during the festivities for the presidential inauguration. It was originally printed on www.tigerwoods.com.

I grew up in a military family -- and my role models in life were my Mom and Dad, Lt. Colonel Earl Woods.
My dad was a Special Forces operator and many nights friends would visit our home. They represented every branch of service, and every rank. In my Dad, and in those guests, I saw first hand the dedication and commitment of those who serve. They come from every walk of life. From every part of our country. Time and again, across generations, they have defended our safety in the dark of night and far from home.
Each day -- and particularly on this historic day -- we honor the men and women in uniform who serve our country and protect our freedom. They travel to the dangerous corners of the world, and we must remember that for every person who is in uniform, there are families who wait for them to come home safely.
I am honored that the military is such an important part, not just of my personal life, but of my professional life as well. The golf tournament we do each year here in Washington is a testament to those unsung heroes. I am the son of a man who dedicated his life to his country, family and the military, and I am a better person for it.
In the summer of 1864, Abraham Lincoln, the man whose memorial we stand, spoke to the 164th Ohio Regiment and said:
"I am greatly obliged to you, and to all who have come forward at the call of their country."
Just as they have stood tall for our country -- we must always stand by and support the men and women in uniform and their families.
Thank you, and it is now my pleasure to introduce the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club.

I have never been more proud of Tiger Woods than when I heard his 2-minute tribute to the military at the Inaugural Celebration in Washington DC . You know he was greatly pressured to be there. You know the liberals have been mad at him for a decade for not joining their ranks. You know he didn't want to be there. So instead of paying homage to Obama, he paid tribute to our soldiers. Not one time did Tiger mention Obama or the inauguration or the new administration. You know, he knew he would disappoint, even anger, many, many liberals. But Tiger is his own man. His old man taught him to be his own man.

??? Has the whole of SAF just turned into one big Obama bashing exercise, seems that way, lets trawl for news that paints the president in a bad light, who cares if the carriers were scheduled for decommissioning years ago why let facts get in the way of a good ol bama bashing.

Woods broke his own rules about not speaking on politics to support Obama, its even said he made a sizable donation to his campaign and of his election he said:

After Obama's landslide victory, Woods said on CNBC he had been hopeful that a black man would be elected president in his lifetime.

"I think it's absolutely incredible,"

"He represents America. He's multiracial. I was hoping it would happen in my lifetime. My father was hoping it would happen in his lifetime, but he didn't get to see it. I'm lucky enough to have seen a person of color in the White House."

Emsa - good observation. :thumb:

What I have read indicates that Tiger Woods has tried to stay out of politics, which IMO is a good thing. Seriously, who cares for whom the world's greatest golfer voted? Athletes and other celebrity figures are wise to keep out of politics altogether.
Regardless of his political affiliations, good for Tiger for participating.

I agree. I'm even OK with them talking about what THEY will do, however, I don't like them lecturing the "common man" on what we should do.

I would take more from this post about Tiger Woods' maturity and what he holds to be important. His politics aren't selfish and he understands what sacrifice is. Need to replace Congress with more of his type!

Kudos to Tiger woods for his speech supporting the Military and his military family and his political choice. But when are we as a nation going to stop raising sports figures and actors/actresses to a place where we actually listen to their political ideals and follow them like blind little sheep.. (this is not geared towards anyone, but so many Americans)..

Listening to some actors and actresses during the elections make me sick to my stomach.. Actors and Actresses have no reason to give us recommendations as they make millions on us running to the theaters to watch the movies they "ACT" in. So many have no education after high school, but alas that doesnt even matter......... We as a society need to listen to the lawmakers and actually hear what they say and follow our own thoughts, ideals and stands and not be swayed by the left or the right, but make our own decisions.

Can we get over the "blackness" thing.. remember Obama is white also.. he is a biracial president elected by the citizens of the USA. People of ALL colors voted him in............

The continued effort to show a BLACK man as president only continues to show a difference in the American. As a mother of a biracial child I learned a long time ago how that is accepted or not, and she was raised to claim ALL of her ancestry... not just one....

President Obama is not just your president, he is our president... whether or not I voted for him.

We should do what we do to benefit the many, not just the one. We need to be a United front, not seperated, and regretfully I see it getting worse instead of better.

I agree, he is every American's President, we as a nation should stand behind him. It's like the family thing, you don't air your dirty laundry in public. In public you show a united front.

As far as Tiger, I give him more credence why he believes that Obama will be a great president than Shaq, who uses bball analogies...honestly I am still not sure what exactly makes a point guard a point guard:shake:

For actors, actresses and Hollywood, I hope they do us all favor...just make a good movie!

For the "blackness" thing...I do see the pride in the African American community, and for America as a whole, but I don't think Obama wants to be remembered as the 1st black president, I would think he wants to be remembered as the FDR of the 21st century. The President that got us out of this economy and increased our allies without doing any harm. I am not privvy to his thoughts, but as a woman, I wouldn't want to be always known as the 1st woman president, but the aforementioned. The sooner we stop saying black/white is the sooner race will no longer be a barrier in our society,
