What do y’all think about more and more colleges, states, and the military banning Tik Tok?

I don’t have it. Don’t use it.

I am personally in favor of it. There is too much of a security risk and the CCP has a long history of espionage in various sectors. In addition to the present security risks, TikTok leads to misinformation. An influencer can be considerably uninformed on a topic, but they will give out information/opinions as if they are an expert. While there is no obligation to be well read on something to give an opinion, I feel it is not productive for someone to get their information/opinions based off what their favorite influencer says instead of doing some research and making conclusions for themselves.

LOL, that would get rid of most business consultants, too.

Isn't this true of about 90% of all online and cable news. They don't earn what the Kardashians earn and they monetize their "brand" according to a different model, but Tucker Carlson and Rachael Madow are influencers within their own realms.

That whole universe--Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc.--is a cesspool even without the Chinese Government connection..

I guess my differentiation regarding TikTok is that I feel it has proliferated into daily life than other apps. I am not criticizing users, but "I saw this thing on TikTok" and people doing weird dances in public are not uncommon. I guess I am just disappointed in my own generation that people's first reaction is to go to TikTok instead of a news source for their information on world/national/state/local events.

I can't stand Tik Tok!! I work in the music industry and Tok Tok has changed the entire game. Artists have become slave to Tok Tok. Some artist agreements require regular posting of Tik Tok content and if there is no presence most labels or publishers wont even consider their music. Oh and also the Chinese Govt uses it to gather data on us, which is not that great from a security standpoint.

Lol I agree about China.

I love the cats and dog videos. That’s what I watch.

Prohiting anything is problematic to me. First off, will banning something work, ever? If so, the USA needs to wake up and ban fetanyl.....oops I guess that has been tried. If people want something they're going to get it. I think Al Capone said that around 1921. Or words to that effect.

I don't have or use Tik Tok but have family members (the wife) that can spend hours on it non-stop, though I think the videos are only like a minute or two maximum. Oh well, keeps her quiet when the football games are on.

Reddit r/aww is great for cats and dogs. Twitter, too!

(I had TikTok for a hot minute a couple years ago and I can understand the high addiction potential.....)

Lol tiktok has a Rottweiler and Black Panther best friends; a coyote, raccoon, and pit bull in a family, a twerking cat, and the funniest cat that tortures a chihuahua without hurting him. And beautiful golden retrievers and goldendoodles.

Good sports stuff.

The rest of it I could not care less about.

It should be banned.... however there's some really funny stuff on tik-tok... really creative people in our world...

Instagram for win, for funny animal accounts. Seriously.

JMHO, but ALL this Social Media has literally killed any semblance of social interaction and in person communication skills! I do not have anything other than Instagram and I only use that to follow family and the services. Tik Toc is dangerous! Some of the "challenges" have injured and even killed young people. The fact the that CCP has direct access to EVERYTHING that gets posted and commented (as well as location and personal data) makes it dangerous.

Both our twins use social media a LOT, and neither one of them has developed the personal social skills that we as younger generations had to develop to succeed. When I talk with our sons', they cannot hold an intelligent conversation and constantly have to look to their phones because some alert has gone off. Young people today will almost ALWAYS choose texting or messaging over speaking. Where does this leave them as leaders? If their electronic communications fail will they be able to lead when they have failed to develop leadership skills face to face and in person?

Seems strange that both China and Russia have developed intelligence, and weapons that are so similar to ours that this could only have happened because of "hijacked" information. We need to stop admitting Chinese and Russian citizens to our universities and our businesses, they are stealing our research. Again JMHO, but any companies with ties to our enemies should be banned and blocked by US carriers. These young people have become brainwashed by social media and it will only get worse. Don't know how to stop it, but if it isn't regulated or blocked this country will see the results going forward.

Sorry for the rant, guess I am just old fashioned, but I would rather speak face to face with someone than text or post a video. Something about the personal side of being able to read someone and make an impression in person that electronically.

It also allows school bullying to leave the building and happen 24/7.

Upon further reflection, I have to acknowledge two redeeming aspects of social media:

  1. Heartwarming videos of cute animals and human kindness improve, if only a tiny bit, the human condition. Posting pictures of what one is having for dinner or posting selfies taken on a stairmaster do not.
  2. It creates an indelible and permanent record from which the poster cannot hide. It does the work of journalists and prosecutors alike.

Excellent point about permanent record - in the Idaho murder tragedy for instance.

I admit I do also like the cooking tiktoks like Gordon Ramsey. There are some fabulous old Italians that put some of their recipes out there.

I agree with the majority of your post (I'm pretty old fashioned too & hate the era of smart phones) but disagree with the banning of Chinese & Russians to US universities. Sure, some return to their countries armed with information obtained from the US with the intent of doing the US harm. But others have very positive experiences from being in the US & develop pro-US sympathies. Some want to stay here, work here, have careers here, become citizens here. Lastly, I agree that that the Chinese & Russian governments are enemies of the US but many others don't. Lots of business people like doing trade with China. Lots of the political right wing in the US have very warm feelings towards Vladimir Putin.

I agreed with your post except this part.

One can be against war and Ukraine corruption without being labeled a Putin lover.

We need to audit how taxpayer money is spent imo.

No disagreement from me. Pretty sure this was the case with Lend-Lease when that began in 1941.

But many on the political right are expicitly pro-Russia, pro-Putin, pro-autocracy, pro-Russian Empire, anti-democracy. Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard, JD Vance , Marjorie Taylor Green, Paul Gosar, Steve Bannon, et al are unabashedly in the camp of Putin & his cause. The Proud Boys are for Putin. Donald Trump called Putin a "genius" AFTER the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The America First PAC, organized by Nick Fuentes, ended their conference with loud applause for Putin's invasion last February. GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell & Kevin McCarty are wholeheartedly pro-Ukrainian, but they are leaders of a political party with a substantial pro-Putin wing.

Pre-Pearl Harbor had plenty of isolationist voices, but hardly any substantial pro-Hitler ones. This is the primary difference between 1940-1941 America and 2022-2023 America.
