Hello, im 18 from FL-19, i know I am a bit old but, I have rekindled my dream of going to a Service Academy (USNA to be specific). I am currently on a gap year enrolling in college this spring or fall to get my AA, and I intend to build a robust application to the Naval Academy. Please provide me with some tips, I want this more than anything.

My advice I’d give to my own family members

If the SA is not recruiting you then by all means apply to more than one SA.

It’s very competitive and every year people that look like super stars get denied.

How much will an AA help? If admitted you will be starting over as a pleb (freshman)

Good Luck

That's a nice place to be from. Which college will you attend?

I want to get an AA to hopefully validate classes in hopes of having a Dual Major

Florida Southwestern, it’s all I can afford since i’ll be working to put myself through college.
Nothing wrong with that. What’s more important, being an officer or the school you graduate from? Do you want to be in the Navy or Marine Corps?

Your issues should not be a double major or any particular major, it’s getting in a SA. A very difficult thing to accomplish.

what you will need is the strongest possible application you can get. Concentrate on that if attending a SA is your goal.

I am assuming you would not have that type of application now for a direct admission ?

Taking STEM courses math and chem and physics would be my advice. And make sure you nail those courses really well.

How do you intend to build a robust application? Why didn’t you apply direct? Why are you taking a gap year? What did you do for your semester off from school (current semester)? Why did your dream of a SA go by the wayside in the first place? Did/how far did you get into applying before (Bc you said rekindle)? Why do you want this more than anything? Why now? What changed?

*NO NEED TO ANSWER* But those are things that you will need to be able to address and articulate, to USNA, your BGO, and Nomination sources. That’s a tip.

Keep in mind, everyone wants it more than anything. You will need to be the future Officer that USNA wants to appoint. Every year, there isnt enough room for all the amazing candidates/resumes that are out there.

You may want to read about advice for reapplicants, even though you are not actually a reapplicant. But there is good advice both here, and MOST importantly on USNA’s website, about what to do. How to prep.

Lastly, have a solid backup plan. Everyone should. And tend to it with vigor, as if you won’t receive an appointment.

Good for you for chasing your dream. Best wishes!
