I'm going into AROTC this Fall and was wondering if you all had any tips or advice for any incoming cadet like myself?

My DS did well because of the following:
  • He got good grades.
  • Got good at time management.
  • Lifted others up like a team player should.
  • Balanced social life with hard work.
  • Studied a major he found passion and interest in.
  • Knew when to set boundaries. (don't take on more than you can handle).
  • Stayed extremely fit.

If you're about to go somewhere, or do something...and you have to wonder whether or not going there, or doing that, will cause problems for you WRT your ROTC program:

Don't go there.
-and/or-
Don't do it.

If on scholarship or trying to contract...
1) Arrive ready to pass whatever physical test is required to contract. That means running and building strength now so it's not a shock when you arrive.
2) Bring documents to contract like SS Card, Drivers License/passport as ID, ... Ask you unit what's required.
3) A 'can do' attitude and willing to learn. If your unit has a mix of prior service and just out of high school cadets reach out to the other 'group'. Your life situation may be different but you can help each other. Great prior service NCO to cadet helped my just out of high school cadet with Land Nav, obstacle course, and 'combat' lanes preparation. Mine was able to help him with science and math tips, tricks, and exam prep. Neither needed assistance in written or spoken skills. If the unit has few prior service cadets you'll have to rely on Cadre - especially Sr. NCO's.
4) Keep your moral compass on point. Even in ROTC units some people are idiots - Cadre and Cadets.
