I remember in 1961, as a plebe, finally being able to leave the Academy and head home to Ohio for some much needed downtime. The best to everyone and safe journeys!

Thank you for mentioning sea year! It revived a memory I have of being in Rotterdam on Thanksgiving of 1962 (my sea year). In those days ships were often in port for days, not hours as they often are today. Anyway, a longshoreman wanted me to join his family for Thanksgiving dinner. It was a long day, starting with church services in a nearby town and a turkey dinner late in the day. I was surprised they had turkey but apparently the Dutch had quite an involvement with our “Pilgrims”.

Since I lived in California, I didn't really get out until the Christmas Break. To be honest, I can't recall what I did that first Thanksgiving. In the years since, I have missed many Thanksgivings being at sea, overseas, offshore (and overseas and offshore). I recall one year, I put my kids on a plane to Florida to spend the week with their grandparents, and I stayed at the airport for my flight to Abidjan, via Paris. I have been a little luckier with Christmas, though. Only missed a handful.

I remember spending a thanksgiving at KP in the dorms because I didnt want to waste a ticket home as a senior for only a couple of days and deal with the travel rush. We had Delano leftovers out of the fridge. Other than that just spent time in the city.

A fridge in the room?

They put the left overs in the fridge at Land Hall. But, mini-fridges were allowed when I got out a few years ago
Not in my day. Each battalion had a wardroom for the first class with fridges, microwaves and comfy couches and an TV.
