To precut or not to precut, that is the question.

Good morning! DS's Head of hair is starting to resemble something very similar to Eric Foreman or Kelso. Is it a good idea to we trim it down before I day? I'm thing once he gets the cut there, his head will be as white as this background and prone to a nasty sunburn during the first few weeks of plebe summer. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Absolutely. My DS is getting a high and tight right after he goes to all the H.S. graduation open house parties.
His girlfriend has expressed interest in doing it herself, so I will hand over the Wahl clippers to her.

He might decide to go full burr cut after he sees that "helmet cushion" on top, but I'll leave it up to him. :)

Cut in a landing strip down the middle. That will impress them.

My honest answer is to let him do what he wants. Its one of the last few decisions he can make regarding his hair and clothes for a long time. If he cuts it, they will still cut it. If he leaves it, they will still put him in the same chair and cut it. They issue them sunscreen and hats for things like sailing, and lots of covers for the other fun filled activities.

You'll always have a cover on outdoors... so the sunburn is a non-issue.

Those Dixie Cups work as a good scalp screen Sun Screen. Leaves a weird tan line though. Hope all enjoy July 4th and fireworks.

Actually with the short hair they tend to get a weird farmers tan ring around their heads. It is actually alot worse at Marine OCS. You can always identify a Marine Officer Candidate in Quantico by horrible farmers tan on their heads.

18ish and attending USNA in a few weeks ... and worrying about a haircut ?

Thousands of young men and women have undergone Plebe Summer, including the customary buzz cut (at least for the guys)-- and unlikely anyone has ever been seriously harmed by sunburned scalp. As others have noted, the Plebes are covered most of the time...except perhaps PEP at 0-dark hundred.

For all the parents who are sending their kids to USNA - Relax ! USNA has a vested interest in keeping your kids safe. The truth is, I would be a lot more comfortable sending my kid to USNA than letting them loose on some urban college campus (I've done it twice !) . Its natural to want to help your DS/DD, maybe give them that little edge, but you are probably causing more angst worrying about what to bring to Plebe Summer or when to cut hair or other details than necessary. Sit back, enjoy the ride ...and things will work out just fine !

Dad - relax! You're overthinking here. Time to step back. I can't remember any problems with head-sunburns and more importantly, you need to STOP trying to "help" with every decision at every turn. Your new plebe will not have you around to watch over and will need to make these sorts of decisions constantly. This is a really, really minor decision with little impact pro or con.
If you really want to help, keep on encouraging physical prep as in running, push ups, etc right up to leaving for Plebe Summer.

And their collared shirts tucked into khakis, carrying an MCX bag and a cup of Starbucks while calling home.

Thanks for the advice. This is a message board and I'm simply drumming up conversation. I thought the question was lighthearted and fun. For all of the great advice and friendly information I've come across on these forums, I'm equally surprised how often people chime in with negative reactions. Yikes. It certainly can be a tough crowd.

Everyone will get a nasty sunburn in the first few weeks... kind of comical looking down the bulkhead and seeing the peeling skin all of the new male plebes are facing...

Buy an extra Dixie Cup at the Mid Store and keep it in the Kid's room. Down the line they will look at it and laugh. Unless they have changed those White Works are like wearing a blanket in summer heat.

I highly doubt any of the replies to your post have anything but positive and friendly intent. The consensus is just that it isn't particularly important in the grand scheme of things. I know it can be a tough pill for all parents to swallow, but when you finally let your son or daughter go, they'll have to make both big and small decisions on their own.

I'm simply drumming up conversation...............

Good to remember you might not always grasp the context of someone else's reply. What someone else thinks is a funny or humorous response, you might not. Also, the same questions get asked on an annual rotation, so you can probably locate a similar discussion doing a search and most likely you aren't the first to ask about that topic.

Usually not too tough. Debate can be good. As always, with things online, they can be taken out of context. Welcome to the forum!
