On this day in 1805, Lt. Presley O'Bannon raised the American flag over Derna, Tripoli. The Battle of Derna was the first land battle following the Revolutionary War. This battle helped establish the Marine Corps legacy as America's expeditionary fighting force.

USMC certainly has a colorful history and hard earned reputation, but can't help asking ... did they even make crayons back then ?:)

Sorry....sometimes I can't help saying everything I think; after 60 years you would think my filter would work better, but not its getting worse- what can you do, cut my hair short and make me join the Navy ? (My hair is already short, and I'd go back in a minute if I could !)

I counted at least 9 Jarheads in that absolutely historical accurate painting. Killing Moslem tair-rists, 18th century-style. Semper Fi!

If you want a truly accurate account of USMC history then ask the US Navy.

8 US Marines. Among a total of 400 attackers

And who supplied the bombardment to soften up the enemy? The US Navy.

And who was in charge of the overall attack ?

William Eaton. An Army officer. :)

And let’s face it the Marines thought this would be a cake walk because I don’t see any Corpsman in that painting

The US Naval ship the Nautilus was involved at Tripoli.

It was also involved in the attack above. And for you career lance cpls it was not the exact same ship that was involved only the same name :)

Something we will never live to see again in this latter attack

The XO of this Bn who was boots on the ground attacking his father was the sitting president of the US at the time.
