I am curious. Would folks be willing share the following for the forum:

1. How long from when a waiver was submitted until waiver was granted
2. Was there a request for AMI, and how long from submission of AMI until waiver was granted

My DS has had an LOA since late January. He submitted AMI per waiver review request over 6 weeks ago and has heard nothing. He touched base with his DoDMERB contact who gave him a contact number for questions. Should he follow up?

Here is a cut and paste from a previous post concerning my dd:

DD just received notification of her waiver approval for USAFA for history of "asthma." as a child. It has been such a roller coaster. We were literally on the way home from an AMI exercise stress test for AFROTC (2nd test!) when she checked her email and got the notice.

Her are her stats if anyone is interested:
initial exam: end of Sept.
DQ October 4th
Waiver requested AFROTC: Nov. 15th
Waiver requested USAFA: Jan. 6th
1st AMI testing: Jan. 17th (ROTC)
2nd AMI testing: Feb. 20th (ROTC)
Waiver approved USAFA: Feb. 20, 2020

AFROTC update: 2nd AMI testing submitted on March 3 (had to wait for MD evaluation of testing)
AFROTC waiver granted: March 9th.

I would suggest contacting Mr. Larry Mullen (follow the FAST sticky on the DoDMERB sub-forum). He will help your son.

1. The best umbrella information regarding SA medical waivers is found on the DoDMERB website , “Questions about the process.” Specifically, paragraphs 11-12, 15-21.

2. AMI isn’t always necessary. Case-by-case basis and what the individual waiver authorities feel the need to render a recommendation or decision.

3. Waivers are reviewed on a first in, first out basis by the Academies medical waiver folks, independent from DoDMERB.

4. In some instances, the cases may be sent to the Service Consultants/Specialty Leaders, for their review. This can certainly add time to that process.

5. Waiver decisions are posted to the DoDMERB website electronically, when the SA renders their decision. DoDMERB will not know the decision or the waiver authority workload. Admissions officers are the only folks tracking these decisions, but they are not medical.

6. Bottom lines? There is no specific timeline to any individual medical waiver case at any SA.

I accept there is no specific timeline.
I have also read that information and candidates can "get lost in the shuffle". Given the current environment of chaos, I am trying to assess whether it may be time to follow-up and make sure my DS has not been "lost in the shuffle". If the average wait is 8 weeks, then my DS's situation is O.K. If however, the average response after AMI is 2-3 weeks, then maybe it's time for some due diligence on his part. (He has been the model of patience)

Thank you Hawkeye Mom! I appreciate you sharing your DD's process.
It seems to have proceeded very efficiently.
Best wishes to your DD and her future endeavors!👍

Given that, then your DS, not you, should contact his Admissions Officer.

Both my DS (2013) and DD (2021) needed waivers from KP, and both had to submit AMI. They each got their offer of admission from USMMA within 1-2 weeks after that. My DS had three issues, two of which were pretty complex. I would definitely have your DS call or email Admissions. With an LOA, I don't think it should take this long to get a decision. Good luck!
