"vaping is ruining student athletes", I've been using ecigs for about 2 years now. Hasn't effected my athletic ability one bit. I can still run for miles on end, hold my breath for more than 2 minutes, and perform just as well in any sport that I'm playing.

It’s a whole new industry. Not going to debate the subject because I’m not a medical professional. But this attitude and opinion is exactly part of the problem. Kids/young adults don’t see anything wrong with it. And I guarantee if you are an elite athlete where hundredths of a second matter, you would perform better not putting stuff into your body that it wasn’t designed to process. Maybe you ‘do fine’, but you could do better.

Check back in 10 years though and measure your your pulmonary capacity.

Just like people have been saying that smoking doesn’t affect them for decades, or until they get cancer. Vaping will eventually change your life in not a good way. Unfortunately seeing the statistics and saying your immune is sad. Vaping is an addiction to nicotine just the same as smoking or dipping. Don’t be naive and think you are immune to the affects of nicotine. In addition the way that vaping enters the lungs is doing additional damage. You are in good company though as most vaping companies are targeting kids, getting them hooked with candy flavors and telling them it’s not addictive.

Serious question: what is the policy for smoking/ tobacco use at a SA? Our oldest sons State U is a tobacco free campus. Not sure if that includes vaping or not.

I have never seen a Mid smoking or vaping. Do they do it on the down-low? Is either allowed on premises? Can they do it at sponsors? Wonder the policies.

Also wonder if it’s disclosed on DoDMRB. Or even a question. And if it is, and one discloses vaping, how is that viewed (a throwback to the whole integrity of lying on DoDMRB questioner thread)?

I was at Walter Reed this morning for my annual medication refill and heart and lung check. I ran into a midshipmen in his whites who could have been in a recruiting poster. I would put a bunch of money on him not being a vaper, smoker, or user of anything but PT and motivation. The young fella was a stud and added to my hope for tomorrow. Smokers after a few years not only have cardio and respiratory problems but a facial appearance that is akin to an old catchers mitt. I can ID a smoker from a long way away. So smoke on smokers, Earth is overcrowded as it is.

The SAs are Fed entities, so probably have the usual not inside, not within X feet of doors, only in designated areas, for smoking.

At the command level, this is an example policy:

Certain activities are also prohibited while in uniform.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but I always hear how "kids don't know it has nicotine in it", anyone who I have ever interacted with the uses ecigs know they have nicotine in them, that's why we use them and why we want a hit. I completely understand that I'm a hopeless addict to nicotine at this point, but I try not to worry about that because I think stress is a little bit worse for you than a nicotine addiction. Maybe one day I'll quit, but maybe I won't, who knows. For now though, I'm enjoying the delicious mint flavor of my juul and the headrush it gives me.

@Ohioclass, while I’m disappointed in your choice to smoke/vape, I will go to my grave believing that this is your decision and your decision only. The right to make choices that affect only you should be yours alone. That’s a principle worth fighting for.

If you are old enough to join the military, you are old enough to decide to vape or not to vape. Joining the military might be more hazardous to your health.

Vaping is huge in the middle and high schools...they think it won't hurt them (that whole frontal lobe not developed yet thing...). I tell them they look like smokey rednecks. Sorry...it's about the dumbest looking thing I've seen.

I am a substitute teacher k-12, and I did security for our district for 3 years. The rise in use is astronomical. It does affect you medically whether you choose to admit it or not. Yes, you have free will and can decide for yourself. What I have seen first hand is massive addiction. And not just to the incredibly high levels of nicotine. You can refill the pods with pretty much anything. We have had kids leave campus in cuffs because it was liquid THC they are vaping (in class mind you). It is incredibly hard to spot the devices and those using are masters at disguise. The 'vape smoke' can be turned down, scent can be really strong or in some cases not noticeable. Liquid opiates can be used in ecigs. The FDA doesn't regulate the chemicals that go into the juice. We outlawed lead paint but currently allow ecig juice to contain nickel, chromium and lead. To think that this isn't affecting you medically is simply denial.
I have empathy for the addiction, not the denial. I speak to my students every chance I get about this dangerous habit. It has become such a problem at schools that this year our district did a whole seminar for all students on vaping, utilizing County Health Dept. and law enforcement. We are now reaching out to educate the public and parents in our community. We have kids who now steal to sell the stolen item to pay for their habits. Since school principals aren't CSI investigators, they don't typically have any way of knowing what the juice is; ie, nicotine free juice, nicotine juice, THC, opiates etc. There are some districts that have gone the route of changing policy. Any ecig possession will be considered possession of drug paraphernalia and involve law enforcement. Imagine the issues that will create in a young applicants criminal history. The missing days of school due to suspensions is ridiculous and in and of itself detrimental to student success. Coaches across the nation are struggling with this as well. Our Athletic Dept. is considering vaping offenses to be cause to be removed from the team for that calendar year. That won't help Candidate Activities records at all...... I could go on, but to each his own in the end.
