I want to join CAP regardless, but was wondering if joining the summer before sophomore year was too late to either earn awards and rank like Mitchell or if I wouldn't have been in long enough to make a difference in applying to USAFA.

Before sophomore year is more than enough time to join, get experience, and get Mitchell. If at all possible, join soon, so you can go to Encampment this summer (a requirement for Mitchell)! Encampment will be almost-free for most cadets this year too.

Oh really? Thank you! Is there a certain amount of time you have to be in before attending an encampment?

Just get your first achievement (Curry). The other benefit of going to Encampment this summer is you can get valuable leadership experience next year on staff. I will PM you with more details.

My son surprised us with an interest in USAFA/USMA in the spring of his Freshman year. We started researching and learned of CAP that summer. By Sept of his Sophomore year, my son joined CAP. He has made some great friends. has become much more confident in himself and his ability to be a leader and to teach others. He attended encampment the summer after Sophomore year and will attend this summer as a staff member. ( he is currently a Junior) . He is also member ( now Cadet Commander) of the Color Guard as well as a member of the Cadet Advisory Council. He expects to achieve his Mitchell by the end of the summer. So, kmargie25, it is definitely not too late for you!

That's exactly when I joined CAP and I ended up getting all the way to Mitchell. It was definitely worth it.

Never too late until you are too old :) Seriously, depending on how big your squadron is, you could very well end up with high leadership positions within a very short time of joining! I became Cadet Commander of my squadron (highest position available, in charge of all other cadets), within less than two years of joining. I was the first sergeant about fifteen months after I joined.

I am a CAP Senior Member and have been attending CAP with my son for 6 years. He will be going to an AFA Prep School in the fall and hopefully the AFA June of 2017. Yes join and try to go to a summer encampment because when you go to summer encampment you can attend other activities. There is an encampment in FL after Christmas to right after New Years too. Probably some other holiday encampments too. Try to rank up as fast as you can and get as much on your resume as you can. Attend the meetings as much as you can as opposed to once a month...... CAP gives you a track record for your resume to talk about in interviews. You lead 5 people then 10 then 20 then 40..... resume fodder..... Don't wait....
