Top 5 movies

I read through the lists and realize that Movies are really low on my Give a D@mn list.. I haven't been to a Movie Theater in years (ever since I tried to go and found you have to plan in advance, go online to pick a seat, etc. instead of just walking in, paying my $ and sitting in the first open seat). Sure, DW and I watch movies at home frequently (big screen TV, Soundbar, surround sound, and stocked bar!), but my ability to recall movies and particularly actors and actresses is really low....very few are that memorable (but I recognize most of the names posted). Of course, my taste in movies rarely reaches CAPT MJ's exalted definition of "films, " and often dips into the sophmoric category (two of my favorites/most memorable are Animal House and Caddyshack ). Beyond I like most of the military flicks listed above, but nothing reaches of the level of a top 5 list, except for perhaps "The Longest Day" and "Patton".

We are having a blizzard. Will be renting Joker tonight on our big tv/sound bar/surround sound and nacho/chili bar. Hunkering down.

How about this: what’s the last movie you saw in a theatre?

For me it was forced family fun while the MIDN was home and it was Midway. Before that it was The Star Wars Rogue flick. It’s been a while!!

Not in order - and more than 5:

Godfather
Rocky
Harry Potter Movies
Shawshank Redemption
Avatar
Sound of Music
It’s a Wonderful Life

Don’t forget my taste for John Wick. Also Jason Stetham Transporter movies. Rule Number One...
Also beautifully filmed “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” type movies. And pretty much any of the historical drama Merchant-Ivory or Masterpiece Theatre style literary adaptations.
I admit to loving “films” in their arty sense and movies at their most entertaining. DH and I have a standing date to see new Bond films at the local IMAX theater, but otherwise it’s at home on the big screen with our own theater system.

The arty film sensibility found me in college. My university had an acclaimed classic film program during the week. Eight pm without fail in the library theater, would be a free gem. They would be organized by actor, director, genre, theme or other fun category (swashbuckling with Errol Flynn! Big Blonde movies with Harlow, Grable, Monroe, mysteries, murder, romance, comedies). Exam week might be all the Chaplin movies. I saw all of Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, and other major classic movie star movies, all of Streisand musicals, all of Hitchcock, all of filmed Broadway musicals, great British actors, got introduced to mysterious and mystifying European directors such as Pedro Almodovar and others (sub-titles, smoking, unhappy endings). That was my study break almost every night for 4 academic years. It was eye-opening to someone who had grown up on a coastal barrier island. My mom and dad got a kick out of me mentioning the movies they had grown up with.

Bridges of Madison County
Pretty Woman
Steel Magnolias
The Notebook
Bridget Jones Diary

While not absolute, there is a sharp male/female divide on "those" movies. I've been to events with work friends, shipmate and/or social friends and it is not uncommon for movie quotes from the Caddyshack/Blues Brothers/Ridgemont High, etc genre to start flying and the participants seem to be 90% male.

Little Women last week (yeah, my arm was twisted) in a theater with recliner seating.

Before that - Midway.

We usually go once or so per year to an actual theater but see many more at home through streaming

Same here! There is a nice sliver of SD, ND, and MN that are getting roasted by a storm. Can’t drive here, they have not plowed.

> I really don't remember. We used to have kind of a tradition of going to a Movie on Christmas or New Years day, mostly to get out of the house. However, the last time I went (probably 5 -6 years ago, I walked in and was told I had to reserve as seat in advance or use their kiosk, and I simply walked out, never to return. I spend to much time planning, living on the clock, etc , I just don't care to deal with it when it comes to movies.

My most memorable visit to a theater was a rainy day in Block Island (off the coast of Rhode Island). The islands theater was pretty rustic , kinda a barn with tin roof and all. Went to one of the Harry Potter's, and remember the rain banging on the tin roof, and 5-10 minute intermissions while they changed the reel on the projector. That was probably 10 years ago.

I just saw that as well and had the same opinion. Very solid, enjoyable. Not a 10/10 but an 8.5. Should have been 15 mins shorter. Might go see Star Wars tonight if DS is willing to join. DW not interested :(

Last one in a theater was 1917. I've uncharacteristically been to the theater a lot lately.
Enjoyed 1917, thought it was a great directorial effort and very intense, but prefer more dialog/story in movies.

If you liked 1917 and like words from those who were there, you should see They Shall Not Die Young

Not many musicals in the above lists. My favorite is "Singing in the Rain". Comedy, drama, villain, heroine, dancing, singing and a happy-sappy ending.

Compiling a top 5 list of movies is cruel and unusual punishment. A lot of superb recommendations above and a few surprising ones. Here are some movies which I don't recall seeing above. All but the last four are 50 years old or more.

1. Children of Paradise (Les Enfants du Paradis)
2. The Horse's Mouth
3. Dr. Strangelove
4. Lawrence of Arabia
5. Stalag 17
6. Some Like it Hot
7. The Maltese Falcon
8. The Bank Dick (and anything else with W.C. Fields)
9. A Face in the Crowd
10. The Quiet Man
11. Red River
12. Tora, Tora, Tora
13. Mr. Roberts (also 12 Angry Men)
14. The Third Man (and how could I overlook Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil)
15. Blade Runner (the original - the recent one is good too, though demanding).
16. Any Given Sunday
17. The Whole Nine Yards
18. Office Space
