Town Liberty

Essentially it is permission for a Midshipman to leave the Yard (campus.)

Assuming your asking as/for a prospective Mid, so in that case, town liberty as it relates to Plebes is usually just permission to leave the Yard on Saturday. Timing can vary, especially during football season when town liberty starts immediately following a home game's conclusion.

And at the risk of stating the obvious, in the midst of a pandemic, all bets off.

From the USNA website:

Town Liberty – Town liberty will commence at the discretion of the company commanders. Company commanders will publish their requirements for each class to earn town liberty during the week. Normally, liberty for plebes will be authorized on Saturday from 1200 to 2400 (12:00 noon to 12:00 a.m. midnight) and Sunday for religious services only from 0800 to 1300 (8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.) or begin after the last military obligation is completed, whichever is later. Plebes shall remain within the tri-city metropolitan area (Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Annapolis) during town liberty.

Ah, the "Plebes shall remain within the tri-city metropolitan area (Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Annapolis) during town liberty." is what I was looking for, thanks! so they are not restricted to the town/city limits or anything like that

Well....depends on the year. Not sure plebes even know what ‘town liberty’ is this year 🙄. Kidding, sort of. NORMALLY that’s it. This last year? Not the case. So who know going forward. This year it was ‘restricted liberty’ the couple times my plebe received it. No traveling. So basically in town. But my older guy usually headed to DC on his liberty as a plebe. Explored the Malls, met friends. Another fav was Baltimore.

Still hard for me to believe that my ‘24 hasn’t experienced any of that. What a year it’s been.

Here are the definitions for town liberty as defined in MidRegs:

"4/C shall remain within a 35 mile radius from the chapel dome during town liberty."

"All midshipmen must gain approval through a special request chit and ORM from the Company Officer if leaving a 150-mile radius."

Therefore, plebes must stay within 35 miles of the chapel dome as the crow-flies. (This includes all of DC and Baltimore)
Upper-class are given a bigger radius of 150 miles.

Here are the times for town liberty (during non-pandemic years).

Plebes must always be in uniform while on town liberty. 3/C must be in uniform if they are inside a 35 mile radius of the dome. 1/C & 2/C can wear whatever they want.

According to what our DS told us last night, there likely won’t be any off-Yard liberty until mid May - or until the 0 block. No liberty until two weeks after the last group of mids gets vaccinated. He was in line Thursday for a shot and they asked, “You guys exited to get a shot?” They all yelled in the affirmative and then were told “Well, were out of shots today.” So, hopefully this Thursday.

BUT...they got through tons more than they had planned last week. In two days. They are ahead of the ‘one battalion per week’ that was scheduled. My youngest was originally to be 2weeks from last Thursday (day 1). Then he was told go Friday (moved up 2 weeks), then, once they began on Thursday, he was instructed to ‘go now’! Pretty impressive (I have heard the 50 pct of the Brigade were vax’ed last week...nothing official). But my owns experience would lend to that based upon his original 2 week out, of a 4 week schedule.

Any mid can submit special request chits for almost any reason. In my company, plebe "out of radius" radius chits were almost blanketly approved on 3 day weekends, provided you were SAT in all areas. YMMV.
