Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what walk-on standards are like for track/ xc?

My current P.R.'s are:
1600 - 4:35
3200 - 10:04

I know my times aren't really near recruiting standards for most reputable D1 programs (Navy included), but I guess it'd be nice to hear what info anyone could provide.

You should go look at the Navy Athletic site and see what kind of times they ran this year and what the competition in the conference ran. That will give you a real good idea.

I checked on their website and compared with some of their guys. Some of their slower 1500 runners converted to right around my time in the 1600. In conference, though, I would have ran second to last in the 1500 with my 1600 PR conversion.

Edit: I guess to elaborate more on my post, there is a competitive club sport team that I could definitely compete on at USNA. However, I enjoy running a bit more, and if I had the chance to run I would probably take that, even if I'm not competing in any important meets throughout the year.

I'm in the same boat. I have pretty much identical PRs to you. I might just end up doing the club marathon team, though. A plebe on my CVW told me that the XC team has a JV roster but those are still mostly guys who ran 4:30 in high school.

During Plebe summer there will be an opportunity to talk with coaches. If you aren't being recruited and don't believe your times are good enough there is really no reason to contact the coaches now.

Give it a shot.

The Navy XC and Track program has a rich and deep history. Coach Cantello is a great coach but has a lot of quirks to get over. However, he is incredibly successful at making great runners.

Your times are good enough to walk on. They were better than mine.

Cantello takes 25 plebes each year. And there are about 25 more mids on the team.

There is a really big attrition rate. Some people dislike Cantello and the team atmosphere. Others just get swamped with Academy life.

The saying is that "Cantello doesn't cut anybody. You cut yourself."

There is some truth to that. Cantello gives ample opportunity to succeed on the team. You can get "cut" but still come back to practice. It's happened before. Some of the runners who ran at XC Nationals this year were those who were "cut" but kept coming back.

KEEP COMING BACK. It's worth it.
