My 2/C Mech Eng MID is looking to possibly lighten his courseload over the next few years and not take 19 credit hours. I know of a few universities that offer online summer classes. These have 2 sessions, so he could manage it around summer cruise.
Early on he was advised that you need to take ALL of your classes at the school you are enrolled if you are on scholarship. Is this the case?
TIA

When in doubt, "read the ROD" and your university-specific rulebook if one exists - link from official navy page:

NSTC M-1533.2D Regulations for Officer Development v18 Final

But my understanding is the military science, physics and calc requirements have to be completed at a university which has a ROTC participation but that MIDS are otherwise allowed to transfer other credits as long as their course of study approves transfers for that course. Specifically courses have to be approved by his naval advisor into his four year plan, his regular academic advisor, and also be accepted formally by the university. All separate processes/ paperwork. All in advance.

How do you know when your summer cruise will be? haha. my DS was notified like 2 days before deployment but I suppose he did have a general idea to work around. See if you can find asynchronous courses to provide the most flexibility.

Good luck.

yes, I get you with the Summer Cruise info (we lucked out summer and he got his CORTAMID info for West pretty early). That is why he is looking for the online ones with 2 start dates: he could register for both sessions and then drop the class that conflicts.
It would be for some genEd credits in theory. Thank you.

The mid should check with unit advisor. DS could do courses at other schools or even CLEP some general ed. Critical piece is that the University will accept the credit. Check that piece also before hand because the unit has no say in what the University will accept.

I recommend that your son speak to his cadre in NROTC and his university advisor. My DD is in AROTC and spoke to her cadre and university advisor to receive permission to take a course last summer at her local community college.

We knew that we would have to pay for the course (since it was taken at an outside institution and during the summer), and we knew that both AROTC and her university advisor would have to approve the course for her degree plan.

All REALLY GOOD advice by all. The usual General Edu classes normally don't have a problem as long as they are similar in content to the same one offered at the home school. BUT.....ALWAYS BETTER to get the OK from his Command and his University that:
#1 It is accepted for credit at his/her University
#2 That it fits his/her NROTC Degree Plan
#3. That his/her PNS Advisor is aware of what is going on and supports it

Realize that most STEM Major students have tken 19-21 semester credits every year while in NROTC. Reducing that load by ONE GE class is not going to make a huge difference in their coursework but may cause him/her to have no summer "down time" going into their Senior Year (the last time for enjoying themselves without being an Officer). If it means a lot to them, by all means follow up and get the requisite permissions and assurances and go for it...

A lot of good replies above, and I echo the sentiment to check with the unit. More importantly, check with the university that they will accept the credits from a particular college. My DD took summer course to 'lighten the load' as well, but she had to have university approval from her advisor in her major, we had to forward a copy of the curriculum for the course before they would allow it. While the school took the credits toward her degree, the grade was not counted toward her GPA (which was a bummer when you need every tenth of a point you can get!)

Everything said above is great and accurate. We had people (at least 10 every year) take summer classes to "lighten the load." Very much depends on unit and type of class as mentioned above
