If someone reading this has a son or daughter who has done this then hopefully you can answer my question. But I am a current freshman in college transferring to the Naval Academy and I am wondering how to go about the transfer process, since I am not technically "transferring" (my gpa, my class credits, etc.), should I still fill out the regular form my university provides (I-20/SEVIS)? Is there some other sort of form for service academies?

any guidance is appreciated!

I believe that you do not transfer credits or gpa to USNA. Everyone starts out with zero credits and has to put in four years.

Do you have an appointment in hand for the Class of 2024? In that case, just do everything the Permit To Report package tells you to bring. The PTR starts going out April-May.

You seem to be aware no actual credits transfer. During Plebe Summer, you will take validation exams to see if you can validate date a class or be placed in a more advanced section. USNA.edu has more details on requirements for validation on the academic department pages.

I think the I-20/SEVIS form relates to foreign national students at U.S. colleges. Are you a foreign national? In that case, I would discuss with your Admissions counselor and your home country contacts.

I transferred after two years, USNA didn’t even want my second semester transcripts. Keep a record of them as I was actually able to validate some history classes by showing them to the dean plus a class syllabus. However this is very rare and only because the course was specifically tailored to Naval History. If you have taken classes in python or C and end up going cyber or CS it isn’t unheard of to get your basic programming class validated as well if you recurved an A previously and can show you are proficient. But when it comes to the college’s transfer form it doesn’t do anything for you at USNA. Congrats and good luck.

Hmm... DS is now a plebe who went to USNA after one year in civilian college. He had a pretty different experience.

He was able to validate 2 Poli Sci courses from civilian school as well as another AP course from high school (either history or government, don't remember which). But he did have to send in his complete, 2-semester transcript to USNA. Like you, he had to bring in each course syllabus (so YES, be sure to download those now!), but did not need to see a dean. He just worked with his ac advisor and the department chair, both of whom seemed very encouraging for him to get as much credit as he could. His sense was "Ask and ye shall receive."

So maybe getting validated credit for course work is highly department dependent or something? Or maybe depends on who is the department chair at the time?

Thank you everyone for your responses and thank you Capt MJ for the links. I am not an international student so I guess I do not need to complete those forms. I will consult with my admissions counselor and then notify my university that I will not be returning, they have a "Not returning" form I have to fill out.

That’s awesome. He has a really good mindset for the academy it seems, many people are afraid to ask but the only definite “no” is if you don’t. Definitely depends on who is in charge at the time I think. He will be very happy for the validations later on.
