I think I read in DS's scholarship info that 4 year recipients get their travel reimbursed for their first trip to school. If they are driving do they just submit the distance and get reimbursed at a standard mileage rate? We are 700 miles from the school where he will be attending so could be quite a few $s. Thanks!

If they are driving (or the parents are driving) they won't have to submit anything. Their unit will reimburse at a standard rate per mile based on the distance from home of record to the unit. If they travel on an airplane, train, bus, etc. they'll have to submit the receipt.

@NavyNOLA, I believe the OP is referring to AROTC. Does this apply to 4 year Army scholarship winners?

I can't imagine it's much different, but I'm not positive.

Funny story.
DS did AROTC at a military junior college. They arranged his transportation to show up early for what they called mini camp.
They had him flying 500 miles, catch a connecting flight, fly 400 miles back, then they would drive 2 hrs to pick him up and 2 hrs back to school.

We only live 3 hrs from the school. We just called to see if we could drop him off and save the hassle. They did reimburse us for our travel.

For an NROTC scholarship, I believe they will only reimburse up to the cost of an airline ticket, is that correct? I am planning to drive my DS to his unit, which is about 2300 miles away. It will be easier to get his stuff there, plus it's a good opportunity for some father/son bonding on a road trip and catching some baseball games along the way.

The government wants incoming mids to travel in a cost-effective manner, so choosing to drive 2300 miles over flying may result in a much more expensive claim. In that case, the reimbursement could be limited. Contact your unit and ask for their Human Resources Assistant to clarify. I generally try and avoid that type of admin stuff like the plague.....
