Hey guys!
I am planning to apply to USMA class of 2021 and was wondering how much weight travel/club athletics have on the application. I am very dedicated to my program and hold positions as a team captain, and a coach of several younger teams. I was just curious how much weight(if any) this would have on my application. Thanks!!
Go Army!!!

I can speak for my sons and their application to USAFA. Homeschoolers, they fenced at the same studio for seven years before they were recruited by the USAFA coach. The fact that they won regionals, nationals, states, and all sorts of other competitions played a huge part in their "getting in." I would go so far as to say fencing was a "hook" for them. But they still had the complete package

Thank you for the feedback!! I participate in a competition cheerleading and hip hop dance program (Yes, competition cheerleading is a sport, like gymnastics but with lifts) and go to nationals and the world competition every year. It makes me feel better that this will be a contributing factor on my application :)

SA's make a distinction between sports and extra-curricular activities. I know some in the past on here insisted that band at their school was a sport because of the work involved, but the SA's don't see it that way. Cheerleading & hip hop dance are probably in those same cateories if that is what you are asking.

I have seen some of those cheerleader competitions and I don't think USMA will have any doubts about cheerleading being a sport (can't speak to hip hop since dance of any kind is outside my ken). I have seen cheerleaders at USMA sporting events.

Thank you! It's always nice to hear about someone who knows just how serious competition cheer is, especially at higher levels. Hip hop, while also decently intense is more of an extracurricular activity which will still go on my application(we go to nationals every year) despite not being a sport. Thanks again for the input :)

The regional commander has discretion to grant varsity equivalent credit to non varsity sports. A good example is martial arts. Not aware of any high school giving varsity letters for martial arts. However, say if you are a black belt and spend several hours a week training, the Regional Commander can grant varisty letter credit. So when you apply, make sure your Regional commander know how many hours a week you devote and what level of competition you participate in.

We live in a backwater of the fencing community, plus my kids were homeschooled so no school sports, but they regularly put in 20+ hours a week just in practice and then there were the tournaments, tournaments, tournaments.

If you have a cd of your squad, maybe offer it to the Reg Com if s/he is unfamiliar with what you do in cheer (not likely unfamiliar though; it's been around at high levels for several years).

Can you clarify if you mean marching band or regular sit down band. Personally I participate in Marching band Every fall. As a rising high school senior and through my experiences in different athletics such as high school soccer and high school track I think Marching band is considered a sport. It takes incredible mental focus and a large amount of stamina and practice to be able to perform as well as some do. Even competitively speaking DCI is a national marching group with the best from our nation, similar to other athletics that are considered sports

Either one. I am not aware of any SA who considers band a sport. What matters when applying is how the SA categorizes something, not what we think it is.

I have a question for MemberLG. Can I PM you? if so, how do I do that? Thanks.

Check your privacy setting - the site doesn't allow to me PM you.

As for asking varsity letter credit on what you do - contact the your regional commander either by email or letter simply asking his or her consideration to do give you varisty letter equivalent credif for whatever you do. The worst thing that can happen is that the RC will tell you don't believe in what you see on this forum and I am full of S #$@#$@ or the RC can say yes.

I believe there is no double credit, so if an activity can be credited for one thing, it can't be credited as varisty sports.
