Travel to I-Day

When you get your Permit to Report packet, sit down with at least one parent and go over everything in it.... DS and I spent 30 minutes a day until he was done with everything.... hard to keep a soon to be high school graduate in one place for more than 30 minutes....

It's important that you both know what is going on, because plebe will most likely forget a few key points. Plebe's world is about to change drastically and even though DS knew that and acted as if he was on top of everything, he was actually on top of the world and enjoying every blessed moment of it...as he should have been!

Yes, DS's I-day travel was reimbursed to his bank account in October. Fortunately, I did get it back from my Plebe! :) He was also reimbursed a portion of his trip out to the USAFA/USNA football game (this comes from the parent group I believe). Just understand that reimbursement will not be immediate. But, you can ask USNA to make your travel arrangements for you for I-Day and then they will pay (someone correct me if I am wrong) if cost is an issue. Use the resources they offer if needed. We purchased son a changeable fare, incase an emergency change was needed, and it was reimbursed.

Also, be sure to make a copy of everything you send back to USNA from the PTR packet. DS left a copy at home, brought a copy with him to I day, and we had a copy in our bag.

Also, when the PTR packet says everything will be provided to you on Iday, believe them! DS brought extra skivvies, toiletries, and underarmour.... detailer locked it up and told him he could have it after Plebe summer.
The only thing he missed were the toiletries and underarmour. I would suggest showing up with a back pack with paperwork, 1 change of underwear, and have family mail you the underarmour, socks, underwear, and toiletries. It will make running around with your stuff a whole lot lighter.

Good Luck!!! DS has had an incredible year, and can't wait to see Herndon covered with lard!!!

Great advise on what to bring or better said, what not to bring. Can literally show up with just the paperwork. Our son took a backpack containing the paperwork, a calculator for testing during plebe summer and a change of underwear. He wore the new running shoes that were purchased just early enough for him to break them in before arrival.

In addition to the other great advice, spend extra time on the medical forms and get any needed booster shots or vaccinations beforehand. If shots aren't clearly identified, your DS/DD will get ALL required shots on I-Day, which makes for painful arms, not to mention possibly feeling a queasy from getting them all at once!

Oh, and we also had wisdom teeth removed (that were going to need to be removed eventually) before I-Day so there was one less thing DS would have to worry about during plebe summer or plebe year.

what to take to I-Day

DD showed up with only a zip lock bag with her phone/charger, id, SS card, prescription and the paperwork that was due that day. Nothing else.

I then MAILED to her a few other things...but they were issued almost everything ever thought of except home made cookies! She said it was easier to just wear whatever was issued so as not to draw attention to herself.

One thing that saved her feet: SOCK LINERS! I sent 6 pair of sock liners to her, they are worn under the socks that are issued and they take up the friction - they help avoid blisters. She had not one blister, she reported that her roommate was battling with mole skin, powders, etc. They are available on REI.com website.
