Travel to King's Point

Good morning all!
Looking ahead as we wait to hear from Academies, DS has already received an LOA to USMMA and we have not visited yet. We are planning to wait until late January in the hopes that he will have a better sense of what other options he may have.
Can anyone tell me the nearest/best airport to arrive and best travel via cab/bus/train from the airport to the King's Point gate?

I think renting a car is an unessecsry pain. Two options as I see it.

1. You’re just going to visit KP and that’s it. Fly in early morning to LGA, or JFK (LGA is slightly preferable). Call friendly taxi in and get a cab with them. DONT use a yellow cab. Fly out at night or stay in great neck and fly out the next morning.

While it’s possible to take a train from JFK to KP it isn’t direct, takes a while, and in the end doesn’t save a ton of money.

2. Make a weekend out of it, visit KP on a Friday and spend a day or two in NYC. Fly in to any of the NYC airports (though LGA or JFK are best). Fly in Thursday night and stay somewhere in the city. You can take a train in from JFK or EWR... cab if you fly in to LGA. Take the LIRR to great neck and then a cab to KP. When you’re done take the LIRR back to the city and spend the weekend exploring.

I can elaborate further, but you get the idea.
 
We visited in September, flew into Laguardia and rented a car. We stayed in Garden City at the suggestion of someone at USMMA as it's a bit more affordable. The drive was pleasant from there to the campus and no longer than 25-30 minutes. I'd looked into super shuttle and Uber, but the cost vs. renting a car was much more. One afternoon we drove into NYC, parked at a surface lot and was able to walk around the Battery Park area, ride the Staten Island Ferry and see the World Trade Center Memorial. The next day we took the train in to Penn Station. We spent 4 days there from late Friday night to Tuesday evening. We had a personal tour of USMMA one morning and DS shadowed a mid through all classes on Monday. Our final day there we spent driving and visiting the beach areas of Long Island.

I believe the LOA mentions that overnight visits are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and because of work and school schedules, we will likely need to make it a two day trip this time. I will certainly look into the hotels in Garden City and it sounds like renting a car for the day may be my best bet if staying a ways out while DS does the overnight on campus.

I think it would be crazy not to visit! We are from the south so intentionally planning this trip when it is cold as DS hasn't a lot of experience with cold weather. I'm hoping the visit will give him all the information he needs to make an informed decision.

I always had a good laugh watching the midshipmen from warmer climates see their first snow or go sledding for the first time.
 
Lol! That’s probably the thing that will shock DS the most. We have ZERO experience with snow and almost no winter.

Or a section of plebes walking in to Gibbs after marching past Wiley Hall with a near blizzard coming off the sound. They end up looking like a six pack of black and white cookies.

The question becomes: Do we fatten him up to ensure a bit more "warmth" or do we stay the course with his slim build and tell him "run to class and you'll be warmer and more fit!" haha...I would give the first plebe 10 bucks for a video of him after the first big snow!

Good thermal underwear.

I understand they wear khakis year round now which makes it more difficult in winter due to short sleeved uniform shirts.

who me ???? ... I don't know anything about any disciplinary offenses.

I managed five years with no restriction. Year six however, it felt like I couldn't get off restriction

Wow - I haven’t heard that term in years, but it brought Navy OCS right back - tossing racks-with-bodies into the bulkhead, spraying the deck with Pledge at corners. Bone-head stuff rooted in poor impulse control. Hilarious until someone gets hurt.

It's the first time I've used it in 20 years, but when I watched the video I instantly thought of it.
 
So are you saying snowball fights are not allowed? This may be a deal breaker. ;(
JUST KIDDING!
 
During my plebe year, around 2015, the senior class made us wear boiler suits to the PKT one Sunday. They immediately later took us outside and basically started a snowball fight that involved the whole class. Wrestling in the snow was big. Too bad there aren't PKTs anymore. Really takes out the fun of the place, in my opinion.
