My son and I are planning a trip to the MMA. Time permitting, we would like to visit Manhattan. I would rather not drive a rental car into the city. I was thinking that taking a train would probably be the best option. Is there a train that goes to Penn Station or Grand Central with a station convenient to the KP area? Thanks!

Yes, from the Great Neck Station. Very easy, about $9 each way. There is a parking garage a couple blocks from the station that we used and were very glad we did that way. Good luck and welcome.

Manhattan

The Long Island Rail Road runs from Penn Station out to Long Island. The closest stop to Kings Point is Great Neck Station which is a couple of miles from the academy. Their schedule and fare details can be found online.

if you stay at the Andrew or Inn at Great Neck, both are across the street from the LIRR station. It's a strait shot to Penn Station from there.

If you drive 2 miles to the bayside station you will get a cheaper rate into the city. If it is during a weekend you can buy a city ticket for $3.50 each way.

We've taken the train from Great Neck into the city a few times... I believe the train is approx $30 to the city... I highly recommend asking your hotel for info- the Inn at Great Neck was wonderful and told us exactly what to do- printed off maps- gave us times for the trains/ subways, and were very helpful. We often asked the people in the ticket booths in the subways where to go and how to get to a certain place. They are also very helpful. The train rides and the subways are very safe... you'll have a great time!

(ie. I recommend going to Battery Park- the Merchant Marine monument is in the water off to the right as you are looking out at the water- and it's VERY cool) If you get off 2 stops shy of the "last stop" when heading down to Battery Park- you will be exactly at Wall Street, Trinity church, Ground Zero... and it's a quick walk to Battery Park. You can look out at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (take the ferry out to see them if you have time, but if not, you'd at least see them from the grounds). Take the subway back up to Time's Square... Bubba Gumps is a fun place to eat, or Ellen's Stardust which is up by the M&M store- Broadway "wanna-be's" sing to you as they serve you your food- it's pretty fantastic- burgers and fries, not expensive). :thumb:

Good luck and have a wonderful visit!
The USMMA is a pretty amazing place! MY 2015 DS loves it, and we are VERY proud of him! I hope you have a great visit! Best of luck to you.

Current one way fare Great Neck to/from Penn Station is $10.00 each way at peak hours and considerably less off peak.

Current average parking fee in a garage in Manhattan is $40.00; also you have tolls on the East River Crossings except for the Williamsburg Bridge.

If for some reason you park where you shouldn't and get towed it's over $100.00 to "ransom" your car back....

Obviously I strongly recommend taking the train which runs every half hour during the day from 0500 till 2100 and then runs with less frequency but does so until 0300.
