In a heretofore unpublicized recent memo, the Pentagon delivered an order to shutter Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that has been a lifeline and a voice for American troops since the Civil War. The memo orders the publisher of the news organization (which now publishes online as well as in print) to present a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by Sept. 15 including "specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.”

After a letter from a bi-partisan group of Senators to the President basically said “WTF?” he realized: Bad idea.

Which is how bi-partisanship works. I am glad they are going to save this paper.

I wonder how access to digital impacts the written paper ... many papers are struggling.

I have fond memories of The Stars and Stripes overseas, but today I do wonder if it is still relevant in a digital age. I know it is hard to let go. BTW, I asked my prior DD about The Stars and Stripes. Got a blank stare. She never heard of it even while deployed.

You know, most newspapers ARE available electronically. There is even a Stars and Stripes App. Hardly anyone reads print newspapers anymore, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop reading

Eliminating a newspaper doesn’t mean people stop reading. Have you ever looked into how many newspapers NYC used to have? Now it’s pretty much down to 2, the Times and the Post.

And the Daily News?

Might have been more of a land force thing as I don't remember seeing it very often during my Naval service.
