So I am guessing I might get a lot of traffic because of the title but there is a program that the Air Force offers to other branches looking to do AFROTC.

Currently i am in a back and forward with my command and my potenial AFROTC Det. Where the TSgt of the det is saying if i put in a early out chit and meet all the requirements i will be commissioned upon graduation . The problem I am having is my package is probably not the most appealing and she is claming this to command and we havent even sent in the package. All she knows about me is word of mouth So i have decided to ask the public of what they think my chances are to obtain a commission.

I am currently a LS3 (E4) in the U.S NAVY with 3 years of service, I am 22 with all outstanding PFAs, all EP evals (except my frocked eval which is a MP),and when volenteering i have been awarded letters of appreciation by two schools, a disable home service, and the special olympic. I have gone out of my way to get a warfare pin that has barely has anything to do with my rate and also have recieved a NAM.(Probably doesnt do anything for me here)I am a sophmore at a 4 year in the computer science field with a 3.3 GPA. (Sucky I know)

Most kids come out of highschool with a lot going on with their package but I was a late bloomer. Am i going up against these new kids or do they have enlisted to officer quotas and I will be going up against someone that work beyond full time with duty? Is this a pipeline dream or something that can happen?

The question is why do you have a negative perception within your unit?

You go up against everyone at AFROTC, some would claim prior E's have a "boost" but in the end I've heard of it going both ways. For AFROTC programs I would assume all you need is your commanders signature for your package, the rest is usually worked through an education center or commissioning source. Remember you can always just do a 3 year program and separate from enlisted and join on your own as you would have the GI bill and possible AFROTC scholarship anyway.

@Zero yeah but dont I need to obtain a schloarship/contract to get the comission? Anyways if I go up against those super packages these highschool kids have than it might be pointless. I will probably give it a go anyways.

@Pima It is just a very bold statement for a TSgt to say this is possible before seeing actually package. You should not tell anyone they will get comissioned unless you are 100% sure. Especially if they have a income and will lose it trying to pursue something that might not happen.

Well, there is never a 100% chance you will commission in any ROTC program, especially AFROTC. I assume you'll still have to be selected for SFT, and that's no guarantee unless there is something special about the program you would be in.

I guess I am confused, what package are you speaking about? For instance there is SOAR AECP for AF enlisted to go into ROTC on a full ride and you stay your same rank during ROTC depending on the package. Those do not compete vs regular students its a enlisted board for members going for their commission. If you just want to join AFROTC nearly anyone is accepted, its the field training EA that you have to compete for, which you would compete against everyone unless you have a enlisted commissioning program acceptance.. So maybe clarify what your trying to do?

Also to answer your question no you do not need a scholarship to get a commission, but you would contract after you complete field training, get a scholarship from AF, or accepted into enlisted commissioning programs.

Agree with zero - confused on what "package" you are building. I believe all the branches have enlisted to officer programs. Not sure about cross over to other branches with that approach.

The issue you may run into is that you state you are a sophomore. With some of the ROTC programs you can only join if you have less than a certain number of college credit hours. So you may run into that issue.

There are many paths to commissioning as an officer- ROTC is only one of them.

Generally with commissioning programs you will have to do 3 years, even if you finish your associates you can stretch it and you can do 1 year of your masters in ROTC. (Just so you know this)

It is the SOAR AECP. @Zero. Sorry. So have you guys know anyone that has been picked up by the program? Maybe even a cross branch like me?

That is also very good information. I did not know this

Yeah I am fine in that aspect @USMCGrun. Thanks though

It is possible to get picked up for AFROTC cross branch, SOAR is super competitive, so keep your options open. Like I said if your determined you have the GI Bill, so really you don't need any of those programs. However SOAR pretty much guarantees you will commission if you don't jack things up.

@Zero Yeah that makes sense, maybe I am jumping the gun a little too much and should just wait for a OCS or OTS package after my degree.

I would suggest you keep pressing AFROTC and don't close doors, use OTS as your last resort. Once you go down the OTS path you cant come back, but if AFROTC does not work out then you can still attempt OTS.
