Turned Down Medically

My son received his TWE this morning. He had received an LOA, but was Turned Down Medically. Is there any type of appeals process that he can try? Thanks!
 
Search through previous posts - there's a lot of medical waiver chatter. What was he specifically turned down for medically?
 
There must be an appeals process for a denied medical waiver but I have not seen a specific process posted on these forums. You may want to try your BGO as a start. If you identify a appeals process please let us know. Aslo, if you don't mind what was the medical condition?

He was turned down for a herniated disc that he received as a result of football injury when he was a freshman. He did not require surgery and he went through physical therapy. He only missed 2 games and went on to be a varsity starting middle linebacker all through high school. He was team captain and voted defensive player of the year his senior year. Frankly, we are stunned that they turned him down. He has no lingering issues due to this injury.
 
We too are waiting a final decision on a medical waiver and also have an LOA. Candidate Portal page went from Required Actions: Medical Qualification to None today so guessing some decision was made...just don't know which way... With DoDMERB down, it's been a bit frustrating.

@Stacimcd3 , did you get an email or just a letter? Was there any update on the Candidate Portal?

Wouldn't it be contacting the admissions officer the first step?
 
Here is a link to a DoDMERB consultant that some folks on this forum have used. Your mileage may vary, but he is a former Marine aviator and Naval physician, plus he is a former DoDMERB Director. I did not use him, but several folks on this forum have contacted him and gotten good advice.

Sorry, DS got medically DQed as well. They must have enough qualified candidates without medical issues. It seems the waivers are few.
 
I hate to be a downer but a turndown is a final decision. Thus, I would be very wary of paying anyone at this point unless you plan to reapply next year, in which case it might well make sense.

Was he being recruited to play on Navy's football team?
 
Thanks. The waiver criteria seems hard to implement. If the disc is nearly or entirely disintegrated (or in the neck C-5/6) I can understand. If your son played middle linebacker without pain for multiple years thats a tough one.

Yeah, the terminology is important. I mean, my son was DQ'd three or four times, but the term "turndown" never appeared.

You are correct. A DQ is a DODMERB decision and can potentially be reversed or, more commonly, overcome by a waiver. Once USNA sends a TWE (email), that is the end of the line. It typically means a medical waiver wasn't granted. That could be b/c the condition wasn't going to be waived and/or b/c there were too many people with medical issues that would limit their commissioning options on graduation.
 
I know I’m 6 years late to this thread, but if anyone is still here I wanted to ask if there is anything at all you can do once they turn you down medically( I am in the process of appealing an inconclusive test).
