TURNED DOWN

God does not close a door without opening a window. DS received a TWE today and in hours I was encouraged to call Greystone. After talking and researching, he has applied. They also told us since we are in state, his local scholarships can be used to offset the cost. I am still scared and in till it is all said and done, plan B is still a go, but I am proud of his determination. I don't think I can do this again, but obviously he does. He went to USNA during summer seminar, and left his heart.
Ditto here, DS went to Summer Session too, unsure if he would like it or not, came home fully committed.

Greystone is awesome Blue... I'm sure he will love it! Just so you know, self prep appointments have about the same ratio as the general public. The Foundation prep appointment is very high. Make sure they break out the self prep numbers from the Foundation numbers before you make a commitment.

Thanks Wonder, I sure will. DS and I also know that it was his SAT scores and his calculus AP grade (low B) that hurt him. I also know that no matter what it will help him, plus I can't stand in the way of his dream. It is funny that as parents we teach these kids that the world is their oyster, to fly and sore, but when they crash, we want them to come back to the safety of the lesser evil ( a sure route). I can not take this from him. He is determined, and I will let him sell this ship as long as the wind pushes him.

If it was his test scores, and you are strongly considering self prep, I would highly encourage you to contact Northwestern Prep. Improving the test scores is an emphasis of their program.

Jebdad, thanks for the info but NWP prep is only 4 months and only works on SAT/ACT...plus they are out of state. DS has several scholarships, but they must be in state. We are so lucky to have Greystone in our backyard. They have been nothing but supportive and helpful. They usually have around 40 students in a class with a 98% appointment rate. They only receive about 30% in the class that are on foundation scholarships. The rest are like my DS. Everyone that I have talked with privately that has had a DD/DS go there has said nothing but great things. If anyone has had a bad experience please message me.

Choosing a school to attend is a personal choice. I definitely understand anyone's reasons for picking one over the other. Just so that there is no misinformation out there, NWP does not "only work on SAT/ACT." At NWP you attend for a semester and take Math, English, Chem, Physics, Current Events, Vocab and do physical training. The reason I indicated that if the test scores are his Achilles, then you should consider NWP as while you are there, the entire group takes the SAT/ACT every time it is offered. The SAT is taken right at NWP and the ACT down the mountain. After the semester, you continue at the school of your choice. You have to weigh each school for what fits your child best. For us, we went into it with our eyes wide open that there was a risk that he could waste a semester of non credit classes if he did not get admitted. DS boosted his ACT scores quite a bit while there and the additional scholarship money he received at the college he chose to continue at actually offset the entire NWP tuition. So, even if he had not gotten an appointment, I would have said the NWP experience was worthwhile. In the end, his self prep gamble paid off and he received an appointment.

I am not trying to sell NWP, I am simply a happy customer who had the same initial concerns as others about it not being "college credit earning." In the end it was the perfect fit for our DS. But again, I would encourage anyone to explore all options. You and your child know their strengths and weaknesses and presented the options, know what would set them up best for success.

I have posted this before. I hope that it will be helpful for those that may not have had a chance to read it.
I'd like to share some thoughts I had with candidates and appointees. I think it's appropriate as we are winding down on the selection process.

One of the greatest gifts a child could give a parent is to be a better person then we are. You are brighter, faster, and stronger then we are. You are morally better, with a greater sence of compassion and empathy then we possess. Every time we witness you accomplish life challenges better then we can, our level of pride for you is unequalled. You have already done this, appointed or not.

I was speaking to my Daughter last night about her plans if she did not get an appointment to the Naval Academy and she taught me a lesson when she said, "I want nothing more right now then to attend the Naval Academy, but I would hope that 4 years spent at a University would not define who I am for the rest of my life. I would like to think I have more to offer".

Like I said Parents. They are smarter then we are and you should all be very proud. Now if we could only get them to clean their room! It's a disaster!

How could you read this post with a dry eye? Truly an amazing daughter! God bless you all

So sorry to hear this @bluediamond :( You offered me some kind words when my TWE showed up and it's reassuring to know your DS has such a kind support system... If he does decide to embark on this crazy journey again, I'll be right there next to him next year! ;)

obably helped that we just completed a 3 day 1000+ mile road trip this past weekend to experience Cal Maritime Day for accepted freshmen at his Plan B school (Cal Maritime Academy)

We had the privilege of eating with our cruise ship's captain a couple of years ago. He was a Cal Maritime grad. Great guy. Great job.

One kid got the BFE another got two TWE. One is USMC Captain and the other is USNR Lt. JG and Merchant Marine. Keep pressing, you can make your path to service.
