I know a previous thread has a similar question, but I suppose mine is more specific to my situation. I received my TWE today and am torn between my two options. I’ve mentioned before that I have an offer to Kings Point and the door has also been opened with my NROTC scholarship at VT. Part of me wants to reapply, but I’m fearful of that not working out. Engineer major so I plan to take plebe-like courses off the bat.

Does my 29 on the math section of the ACT need to be improved even though I’ll be taking college math courses? Will they see all of the leadership I have been involved in throughout HS? How many college NROTC applicants do they usually take? Will they only take a certain number from my unit at VT? Since I wasn’t waitlisted, will that lower my chances significantly?

I see the clear value and opportunity in going to USMMA, and that’s why i’m hesitant about going after this again. Please let me know your thoughts.

My husband is a USMMA grad. He says, take the USMMA route -- unless you really prefer the NROTC school. USMMA is an excellent option if you want to go active duty in the Navy. (His first choice was USNA, but he was waitlisted there).

A recent post which I cannot find was written by a USNA grad, now a USMC officer, who told the good, the bad, and the ugly about his experiences there. He mentioned the KPers at Leatheneck who were as capable and disciplined as the Annapolis middies.

I can't answer most of your questions, but taking that ACT again would really help you application. Just show improvement.

Here are a couple of related threads (there are several more) from a quick google search. Hope they be of some value to you. Good luck!

Only you can decide, but I would advise my own to take a sure thing. All things equal (as in you would be happy there).

What happens if you don’t get an appointment next year? How do you feel about that?

Good luck. Sometimes we have to just take a leap of faith, and not look back. And things always have a way of working out!!

If you definitely want to be an engineer, KP’s program is outstanding. If you definitely want to go to an academy I’d take it. ROTC is also a fine option. Re-applying is fine, I did it, but there’s also value in looking only toward the next thing and not having to “start over” if you were to be admitted the second time.

That’s the bright side of things - every USMMA grad says they never had any regrets.

That’s the hard part. I honestly don’t want to stay at VT. And if I did, I feel like i’d regret not going to KP. There’s that leap of faith...

It looks like this USMMA grad did pretty well in the Navy..

There are two key questions here. First, do you really want to go to KP? It's a terrific school but obviously it was not your first choice. If you want to go to KP, then go, do great, and don't look back.

If you really want to go to USNA, going to VT and excelling can definitely work. I had a candidate who received a TWE, knocked it out of the park in an engineering major at VT and was appointed to USNA the next year. I will say she loved VT and it was a tough call on whether to leave (she did and excelled at USNA as well). BTW, she did not do NROTC.

Second question is how you feel about four years at VT? There are no guarantees that you'll do well enough to be appointed to USNA and, if you aren't excited about spending 4 years at VT and/or will regret not going to KP if you don't get into USNA, then maybe you should be at KP. But, if your heart isn't in going to KP (or any SA for that matter), it's not going to work out.

Not sure where my heart lies at this point and that’s the hard part. What it ultimately comes down to is what route will give me the best chance at becoming a pilot. If that’s KP, then I feel like it’d be an obvious choice at this point. But then again, my four years would be vastly different at a place like VT.
