TWE Is This For Real?

Just a mom with a senior going through this process, I am shocked and so sorry. I know that there is no way to chance candidates and that it is so competitive but this seems to defy logic. I guess we need to readjust expectations and expect the TWE but be pleasantly shocked if it turns out differently.
 
I am shocked that USMA would send a TWE so quickly for what looks like an outstanding applicant. I'm sorry, @alliern .

The only thing I can think of that might close a file this suddenly and decisively would be some kind of school discipline report or something negative said in a teacher recommendation. In no way am I suggesting this is what happened to OP's son, I'm just grasping at straws like everyone else.

I'm hoping with you and all here that this is truly an error.

I agree with your thoughts and would think that would be a valid reason to receive a rejection letter this early. His school discipline record has nothing on it. He has no prior infractions knowing since he was six years old that he has wanted to serve his country by route of a Service Academy. The school staff and teachers that wrote his recommendations for West Point wrote the same for his Nomination applications and he has copies of those. He has civilian college admittances with those recommendations as well. I just don't get it.
 
I am sure your DS has a backup plan. If his ultimate goal is to serve our country, that goal is still within reach.
 
I think your kid should call.
Editing: I think it is worth arriving late at school today to get some sort of answer. If he is getting a bad recommendation from one of his teachers--this will impact every college app. (For one of my boys we learned that the busy counselor was sending a letter of rec for my boy but with another boy's name on it...a college admissions rep told us--and we were able to go back and get it fixed.)
 
I think this early on it was just a mistake, but please report back. Also the other thread mentioned someone with a mistake letter similar to yours so it wouldn't be crazy to think that it happened again.

Everything you have said thus far has been spot on and the same thoughts running through my head. We are thinking that could have been the reason and may be the one we will stick with (for some peace of mind) if he never receives any other answer as to why the early rejection.
He is a strong, resilient kid with a desire to serve as a career military man. He will find a way to do that. It just won't be through the USMA. Everything happens for a reason. He just has to recover from this gut punch. It'll take a day or two, but he has lots to look forward to in life!

So no other answer as of yet other than the FFR said he would look into it?
 
Understanding it’s early stages in processing this, why would he not re-apply to USMA, perhaps while doing AROTC? A good chunk of every class is re-applicants, sometimes 2 and 3 timers. I applaud those folks, because for them, that’s what they needed to do, and they set pride and past denials aside to pursue it. Of course, if his goal of serving as an Army Officer is primary, and he can let the USMA dream go without another thought, he will be perfectly fine charging along the AROTC path. He can always change his mind about re-applying, and can let the thought stew for several months. No need to rule anything out at this point.

I appreciate you bringing people along on this part of the path. In the coming months, hundreds of stellar applicants will receive paper or electronic “TWEs,” with no specific reason to pin the “not you this year” decision on. It is indeed a growth opportunity for the applicants who have probably not had many doors they worked hard to open, not open.

Yes, he has always had his plans A-D in place and he has all of his options laid out. He will figure out what the right path for his future will be. This is just a road block!
 
Lots of Great advice in this thread! If the TWE stands, and your son truly wants West Point versus AROTC at a college, have him apply as a "Walk On" at his college (with his resume he should get a full academic scholarship) do AROTC for his freshman year, then re-apply to WP. The Academies LOVE college re-applicants, it shows drive, motivation, and the ability to succeed in a college atmosphere. One sometimes never knows the "why" a candidate did not get accepted for a given year, but re-applying shows a lot and is often more successful than right out of HS! Best of Luck to your son, WP or AROTC he will do great and attain the same thing....becoming an Army Officer!

Explore ROTC options. DD applied for and received a 4 yr scholarship, and was all set to attend a really good school in South Carolina. In fact, her Mom often laments that she wishes DD had gone that route. But, USMA came calling and DD chose to accept. The point is that tons of 2nd LTs come from ROTC programs and are great leaders in our army.
