TWE received

So, we didn't expect to be one of the first on this forum to receive a TWE but, alas, here we are. My DS received it on Monday. We knew his academics were going to be a bit of a challenge (please don't ask for specifics) but he was qualified medically, physically, had two nominations (JROTC and Congressional), 4 years of JROTC and 1 step from his private pilots license. I'm not sure how "form" these letters are but it did point out some pretty specific ways for him to improve his chances and asked him to consider reapplying for the Class of 2020.

I can't tell you how impressed I have been with the way my DS has handled this news. Instead of knocking him down it's given him a real fire in his belly to succeed next year. "Good, I know exactly what I need to do!" So, best of luck to those still waiting…to the others that will receive their TWE…we'll see ya next year!

Navy Fam, your son sounds a lot like my DS and my DD who BOTH received a TWE and who both reapplied and received an appointment to USNA. If you've been reading the second time on the roller coaster thread, there are many others who had that same drive as your son, and who are now beginning to receive their appointments! Many candidates earn their appointments after a second or third try! So glad to hear that your DS is ready to climb back on the saddle (or on the roller coaster) and work to earn that appointment! We will be looking for his name on that 2020 appointment list next year!

NavyFam, so sorry to hear the news of the TWE, but very encouraged to read of DS's attitude and determination, good for him that will serve him well as he reapplies! Not to give you false hope, but there were some last year and in years past that received the TWE from USNA and were later offered NAPS or scholarships to other Academy prep schools, so I will keep positive thoughts headed your way!

NavyFam,
I hope your DS gets that BFE next year. That great attitude is what it takes to make it through plebe year. Work on the academics and consider ROTC! He may love that even more. Some of them do. :)

NavyFam,
I am truely sorry for your DS. It really is a testament of what a great kid your son is. I am sure a year at Plan B will make him that much stronger of a candidate for 2020.

You should be very proud it is quite an accomplishment to have made it this far! I have moaned and groaned about this process and I absolutely dread the thought of going through this again, but in reality this process has changed my son for the better. He is more driven than ever and much more focused and mature than his peers.

I am still hopeful that we don't get a TWE, but if we do, I look forward to riding the second time with great company.

Sorry about the TWE and I'm sure your DS has a terrific "Plan B." If you read the "Rollercoaster" thread, you'll see that many folks ended up being thrilled with their other option -- and it quickly became Plan A+.

Happy to hear your TWE had specific suggestions. You might also ask your BGO for suggestions.

Best of luck to your DS.

Sorry to hear about your DS's TWE. My DS also received his TWE this weekend.

Does anyone know if USNA sends out different kinds if TWE's or are they all the same. My DS's TWE also encouraged him to consider applying again with specifics to help him gain an appointment next time around. Is this always the same for everyone? Any insight would be great.

It is a tough pill to swallow. My DS is handling it well. The distraction of his Ice Hockey team making it to the State Finals last night in double overtime definitely helps! I know so many of these young women and men will all go on to do great things at the USNA or with plan B. He has always had a strong plan B with the plans to re-apply. Just as "NavyFam" stated going through this process has changed him in profound ways. Proud of all the candidates, BFE, NWL, NAPS, Foundation or even the TWE, they all have accomplished a lot they need to be proud of.

@nukepharm Thank you for the kind words. On to plan B!

Sorry to hear about the BFEs. I think the letters are all the same. It's best to contact your BGOs and RDs for specifics. Also check out the reapplying sticky also. There is a second time on the roller coaster thread of a lot of folks who were in this spot last year. I know it's not much of a consolation right now, but Might help to read that and see how plan Bs worked out, what many did to reapply, how many are getting BFEs this year. Best of luck in your children's journey. They made it this long in the game, I am sure they are top notch young adults who will excel in life no matter where they go or what they do.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but I'm not aware of anyone who received a USNA turndown who was later offered NAPS/Foundation. Admissions has always said that a turndown is final for that year as to all programs. If you have not received any notification and/or are waitlisted, the prep schools remain an option. Also, I can't speak for the way other SAs approach "TWEs" - only USNA.

NavyFam,
Sorry to hear about the arrival of the TWE. Great attitude shown by your son. I'm always amazed/inspired to read about the young people who didn't get in, but didn't let it get them down and went on to other opportunities.

Take Care.

NavyFam and jml1717,

I feel so badly for both of you right now. I know you probably view this as a major setback. But keep in mind what falconchic and others have said--whenever one door closes, another opens.

I realize this is easy for me to say given my current situation. However, I have been in other situations before in which I worked really hard for something significant, gave it my best shot, and didn't make it. So, to some degree, I understand how you feel. Of course, I know this still doesn't make it easier for you. I'll keep you both in my prayers.

Last year, there was a thread in the USAFA forum in which a candidate received a TWE, and no prep school opportunity. She was very upset about this decision, but didn't give up and resolved to keep trying. I think she wrote admissions and appealed the decision. While I'm not sure exactly what happened, I do know that she ended up receiving an appointment about a month later.

Obviously, this won't happen to most candidates, but it does show that in some rare circumstances, a TWE isn't necessarily the end of the road. Remember, it isn't over until I-Day. :thumb:

Best of luck to you as you/DS/DD continue to pursue your goals. Plan B's often make great Plan A's, too! Keep going even though the outlook may temporarily look a little bleak. Great things are just around the corner!

So sorry to hear about the TWEs. It was a tough pill in our house last year, but it led to a year of growth, some self-examination by DS, and a BFE this year. DS will be s stronger Plebe this year for the waiting. I hope those who get the TWE don't lose hope. The fact that you (they) want to serve places them in a select group. They are an inspiration. They really are! I am grateful there are so many fine young people willing to apply their gifts to the service of this great country. We all benefit from the freedoms those who serve protect. God bless you all!
