TWE with No Portal Update?

TWE came in the mail today dated Jan. 31 - but with no corresponding portal update. Also noticed that CFA scores did not change to "Score on File" until February 3rd. Disappointing news, obviously, but it also seems a little odd. I would expect that the portal would report the admissions file closed...at least post the TWE letter under Official Correspondence? DS was LOE candidate, so surprised and disappointed by the TWE so early in the year. Thoughts?

There have been some 'whopsies' with USMA this week, maybe this is one of them?

I would definitely reach out to his RC ASAP

Was a waiver still outstanding? My son got a weird version of a TWE maybe six weeks ago which wasn't a "final" TWE. My son also LOE but no nom so no hope.

@williamsdr3 Thanks for the response. I'm sorry for your son's disappointment too. This is a tough ride. My son has no outstanding waivers and all green check marks. The verbiage seems pretty final "unable to offer you an admission to the WP Class of 2024." He reached out to his FFR who said that he will look into it and to sit tight. Hopefully he will follow up soon!

Please update when you find out. Seems way too early still for a TWE. There have been many oddities this admissions cycle. Hoping that this is just another one.

TWE's are definitely going out now. I know a young man who got one. While he was 3Q with 2 nominations, he was told that he was ranked lower than others on the slates and his WCS would not have him in the top group to be competitive/viable in the national at-large group of appointees.

I don’t think there is any relation between mailings and portal updates. Everyone seems to have a different experience.

I also received a TWE with no portal update and quickly emailed my state commander. I received the following email last night:

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: Please check your USMA Candidate Portal

The USMA file completion deadline recently passed and as a routine action, the USMA Admissions office closed a relatively large number of files due to insufficient progress. Owing to some technological issues, a few candidates files were closed for a brief period, which in turn caused a postal letter to be mailed out. If you received a hardcopy letter in the mail informing you that your USMA application file was closed, there is a very small chance that this letter was sent to you in error.

If you believe you received this postal mailing, you are encouraged to check your candidate portal to determine your file status. Whatever you see on the portal is your true USMA application status. Whether the candidate portal says your file is open or closed, that can be trusted as it is your correct file status.

Thank you and we apologize for any confusion. Go Army!

That is troubling that he was told so early that he wasn't competitive despite being qualified.
I actually think it's a good thing that he found out now, so he could move onto his Plan B, C, or D. and not keep holding out hope. He has a 3-year ROTC scholarship, but is still waiting on USNA and NROTC scholarships. If, mathematically, there is no shot in hell that he has a chance, then tell them now. There are many candidates who are fully qualified, who just aren't the top of the rankings (The next 150 highest WCS) that won't get in. We have all seen if you don't win the slate and don't have a presidential nomination or JROTC nomination and aren't a Prepster, then it can be very difficult to get in if are an "good" candidate, but not top notch and you aren't a minority, diversity, recruited athlete, female candidate or whatever else the academy wants to create a well-rounded class.

Agree with this entirely.

If the notion is that there are many candidates in these categories that are not “top notch,” this statement is not supportable and pretty out of line. Hope I’m misunderstanding what was stated.

This is REALLY interesting! DS has not yet heard back from his RC, so this is the first bit of insight we have received. Thank you so much @Km04! Other than CFA "scores on file," there are no other changes, so I am assuming his application is still open? Is there a notice that pops up that says "Closed." We are just eager to know the "yes or no" either way. It will be OK if it is a no, just hoping for some clarity.

I am so grateful for this forum. Whatever the outcome, this community has been an invaluable resource and source of support. Definitely feeling the love! THANK YOU!

Yes, if the file is closed the portal will, in fact, say that it is closed. My DS withdrew his app in December, and a few days later he checked his portal to ensure it had been closed. It was. On Dodmerb there was a notation that his file had been 'withdrawn.' However, last Thursday he received an email that it appeared his file had been 'inadvertently' closed and was being reopened. It seemed like a very generic email, but he checked the portal and it had been reopened. We assumed it was some sort of computer glitch and were discussing whether he needed to, again, email his RC to let him know he had withdrawn his app when his FFR called to let him know he noticed it had been reopened. DS told him he hadn't requested it be reopened and was still set on going ROTC at his ED school. FFR agreed it must have been a computer issue. So, yes, lots of computer 'glitches' happening last week it seems. But the portal will say the file is closed if it really is closed!

Thanks to everyone for your posts and insight. DS heard from FFR, looks like he failed the basketball throw in the CFA. He is frustrated because he is athletic and passed the USCGA, USNA and NROTC fitness assessments with no issue. It does seem like a pretty insignificant thing to take an accomplished young person out of the running. To be honest, I am wholeheartedly grateful for the "closed door." DS has amazing other opportunities...even one that called his application "phenomenal." I wish the USMA community all the best! I am so proud of our young people for working so hard to follow their dreams!

So sorry to hear this 😔

what was his basketball throw? Out of curiosity.

It’s good that he can move onto his plan B and C, it might be nice to have some closure and know where he’s onto next 😊 best of luck to you and your DS!!
